Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug analysis in Centre Hall, Pennsylvania. For those seeking hair-based drug or alcohol screening, our specialty lies in hair evaluations, with testing facilities in cities nationwide to conduct such assessments. A minimum hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches is typically needed from the crown or body. Our hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or provide bespoke testing solutions.

In the past few years, hair follicle drug tests have become a favored method in drug testing practices. Employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts are increasingly opting for hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. This method supports zero-tolerance workplace policies and judicial requirements. Its primary advantage is a detection window of up to 90 days, coupled with observed collection to prevent manipulation. However, for detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days, urine testing remains the most reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures biomarkers within its growing fiber, offering a prolonged history of substance use. When sourced near the scalp, hair can reveal alcohol and drug consumption over approximately a 3-month period. Hair is straightforward to gather, challenging to adulterate, and convenient to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches, consisting of about 200 hairs (similar to the thickness of a #2 pencil), closest to the scalp provides a 100mg sample, ideal for evaluations. For EtG, additional tests, and those above 10 panels, 150mg is preferred. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to measure the sample. If scalp hair is absent, a comparable amount of body hair can be used. By head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial input of a sample into the laboratory system. This step ensures the sample was sealed and transported correctly, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any missing data entry that isn’t covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening initiates with a quick analysis for drugs. Although Screening is economical for excluding drug use in most samples, a conclusive screen needs validation for legal credibility. Any presumptively positive samples in Screening require further confirmation.

When a sample shows a presumptive positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the primary sample for the Extraction stage. During this stage, substances are extracted at much lower concentrations than through other means (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug analysis the most challenging form of screening.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods confirm all presumptive positives from the screening. Prior to confirmation, all samples are cleaned as required. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes scrutiny under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug usage for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests which have a restricted detection period.
  • Resistant to tampering: Cheating a hair drug test is considerably hard, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: Hair tests can outline a pattern of drug use over months, not just recent activities.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify immediate use: Roughly 5-7 days are required for substances to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests incur higher costs than other testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Despite often being called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle below the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
