Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Chatham, Pennsylvania. For those seeking a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in hair analysis, with facilities in cities Nationwide to conduct such tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is needed. Hair samples can be evaluated for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized testing options.

Recently, the use of hair follicle drug tests for drug screening has become more prevalent. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse specialists often prefer hair testing over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are ideal for employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and probation officers. The key advantage of these tests is their extended detection period, lasting up to 90 days, through an observed collection process; cheating is virtually impossible. Nevertheless, for detecting recent drug use within five days, urine testing remains the best option.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has grown to be recognized as a potent method for assessing drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term history of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the strands of the hair as it grows. When obtained near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to roughly 3 months for alcohol and other substances. Hair is straightforward to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch hair specimen composed of around 200 strands (similar in diameter to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg sample is suggested. We recommend using a jeweler’s scale for the specimen's weight. If scalp hair is unattainable, an equal volume of body hair is acceptable. When discussing head hair, we specify scalp hair exclusively. Body hair pertains to any other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result entails four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial intake of a sample into a lab's framework. This step ensures the sample was sealed and transported correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and includes additional data input absent in an electronic chain of custody.

Screening constitutes a preliminary rapid assessment for substance abuse. While Screening is an affordable way to exclude drug usage for most samples, a positive screen must be authenticated for court validity. Any samples showing presumptive positivity in Screening warrant further confirmation.

When a sample tests presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction step. At this step, drugs are isolated from hair with much lower concentration contrasts compared to methodologies like urine or oral fluid, highlighting why hair drug screening is notably challenging.

Any positive results in the Screening undergo Confirmation using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples posing presumptive positivity are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review according to CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and adheres to ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug tests detect drug consumption for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection span.
  • Cheating difficulty: Cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, leading to more precise results.
  • Yields historical insights: It reveals a drug use pattern over time, beyond just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Recent use undetectability: It takes about 5-7 days for substances to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and personal hair growth variation can influence drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: The term "hair follicle tests" is often used, yet the test actually examines the hair strand, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
