Accredited Drug Testing provides extensive hair follicle drug assessments in Claridge, Pennsylvania. Should you require a hair-based drug or alcohol evaluation, Accredited Drug Testing excels in this method and operates centers nationwide that handle such tests. Typically, a minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from either the head or body is requisite. Hair analysis can detect substances, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored test options.

In recent times, drug testing methodologies increasingly favor hair follicle evaluations. Many enterprises, judicial bodies, and substance abuse experts now opt for hair testing instead of traditional urine screens. This approach is embraced by organizations with drug-free mandates, courts, and probational monitoring. Hair assessments offer a longer detection span, up to 90 days, are rigorously supervised during collection, and are challenging to falsify. However, for detecting recent usage in the past 5 days, urine tests remain optimal.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a prolonged history of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When hair is cut near the scalp, it can offer a detection window of nearly three months for substances like alcohol and drugs. The collection process is straightforward, resistant to tampering, and easily transportable.

A 1.5-inch sample, equivalent to the thickness of a #2 pencil and consisting of around 200 hairs, amounts to 100mg, which is optimal for screening and further analysis. For EtG, additional tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. It's suggested to measure the sample with a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is not accessible, a similar quantity of body hair might be used. References to head hair pertain solely to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The drug test result process at the lab includes four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample undergoes initial processing into the lab's system. This step involves confirming the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data not available in an electronic chain of custody.

Screening involves a preliminary examination for substances of abuse. Though Screening is an economical method for detecting drug use in most samples, a positive result needs verification for legal acceptance. Samples with preliminary positive Screening require a confirming test.

For samples with preliminary positive Screening, more hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction phase. The concentration of drugs is extracted from hair at a lower level compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug Screening a more complex procedure.

Confirmation for any positive result from Screening is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before Confirmation as necessary. The entire lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, offering a longer detection period compared to urine tests.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is very difficult, ensuring the accuracy of the results.
  • Provides historical insight: It shows a pattern of drug use over time, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Detectable drug levels in hair occur approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be costlier than other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth can alter drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Commonly named "hair follicle tests," these tests examine the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
