Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol usage. Hair captures a prolonged record of alcohol and other drugs by embedding biomarkers in the fibers of the growing strand. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer up to roughly a 3-month detection timeframe for alcohol and other substances. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.
A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 strands of hair (comparable to a #2 pencil in size) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal sample amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a specimen weighing 150mg is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair is inaccessible, an equivalent amount of body hair is a feasible alternative. Should a sample show presumptive positivity at the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample to undergo Extraction. During this stage, drugs are removed from hair at a considerably lower concentration relative to alternative methods (such as urine or oral fluid), underscoring why hair drug analysis is uniquely challenging.
Confirmation of a positive screening outcome is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive samples undergo cleansing prior to confirmation as required. The comprehensive lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is oversaw under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.
