Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Cleona, Pennsylvania. If you're seeking a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing is unparalleled, with locations in major cities across the country prepared to conduct hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown of the head or the body is required. These tests can evaluate drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored to specific needs.

Recently, the approach to drug screening increasingly involves hair follicle testing. More employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts favor hair testing over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle assessments are favored by employers with strict no-drug policies, the legal system, and individuals on probation due to their extended drug detection capability—generally up to 90 days—conducted under supervision, and nearly tamper-proof. However, for detecting drug use within the past five days, urine tests maintain their accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has gained recognition as an effective means for uncovering the use of drugs and alcohol. By incorporating biomarkers within the fibers of a developing hair strand, hair offers a comprehensive record of alcohol and other drugs over time. Hair collected near the scalp can provide an approximate three-month detection timeframe for both alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's thickness) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the perfect sample size for screening and verifying. For EtG, additional analyses, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest weighing the sample on a jeweler's scale. In cases where scalp hair is inaccessible, a comparable quantity of body hair can be gathered. When mentioning head hair, we are specifically referring to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the preliminary integration of a sample into a laboratory’s framework. This step includes confirming the appropriate sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an initial swift evaluation for potential drug abuse. Screening serves as an economical method to exclude drug use in the majority of samples; however, a positive screen needs verification to be permissible in court. Any samples that are tentatively positive during Screening necessitate further confirmation.

In instances where a sample is tentatively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. During this stage, drugs are drawn from hair at a much lower concentration compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most intricate methodology to perform.

The Confirmation of any positive screening result is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All tentative positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation as required. The comprehensive laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, contrasting with urine tests that have a reduced detection period.
  • Challenging to manipulate: It is quite challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, thereby enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Offers a historical overview: It can reveal a pattern of drug consumption over time, rather than only recent ingestion.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: It takes around 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier compared to alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result disparities: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration levels of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although frequently labeled as "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
