Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Coaldale, Pennsylvania. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in hair testing, maintaining centers nationwide ready to conduct these tests. For effective testing, you should have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the scalp, though body hair may also be used if necessary. Hair samples can be examined for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored testing options.

Recently, the practice of drug testing has increasingly incorporated hair follicle tests. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse specialists are opting for hair tests over the typical urine analysis. Hair follicle tests are chosen by employers with strict anti-drug policies, judicial systems, and probation officers. The main advantage of this method is the extended detection window, reaching up to 90 days, with collection being directly monitored and almost impossible to tamper with. Meanwhile, for detecting drug use within the past 5 days, urine testing remains the premier option.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of alcohol and drug use by holding biomarkers within the strands of developing hair. If collected near the scalp, hair can offer an approximate 3-month period for detecting alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, moderately resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising roughly 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for testing and verification. For EtG, additional substances, or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of hair is favored. A jeweler’s scale is useful to measure the specimen. If scalp hair is not present, a comparable amount of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair includes other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The procedure for processing drug test outcomes in a lab entails four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning starts with incorporating a sample into a lab’s system. This step checks that the sample is properly sealed and shipped, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performs extra data entry if not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary evaluation for substance abuse. Though Screening is economical for dismissing drug use in most samples, a positive screen is required to be validated for legal purposes. Samples indicating possible positivity during Screening need additional validation.

If Screening indicates potential positivity, further hair is taken from the original sample for Extraction. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair at concentrations less than those used in other techniques like urine or oral fluid, making hair drug screening notably challenging.

Confirmatory tests for positive screening results are done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Samples presumed positive are pre-washed if necessary before confirmation. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning through Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and meets ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests identify drug usage up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests with shorter detection periods.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Cheating a hair drug test is very challenging, ensuring more accurate outcomes.
  • Provides historical data: Offers a usage pattern over time rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs take 5-7 days to be traceable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug testing costs more than alternative methods.
  • Variations in results: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentration.

Note: Although called "hair follicle tests", the examination is of the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
