Accredited Drug Testing ensures comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments across Croft, Pennsylvania. Seeking a hair or alcohol analysis? Our expertise lies in follicle testing, with centers nationwide ready to conduct your assessment. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is necessary. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer tailored options.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly incorporated hair follicle tests. Employers, judicial bodies, and addiction specialists favor this over urine tests. Zero-tolerance companies, courts, and probationary individuals rely on it due to a detection span up to 90 days, observed collections, and difficulty in falsification. Nonetheless, for recent drug use, under 5 days, urine tests remain superior.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a potent means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended timeline of alcohol and drug use by encasing biomarkers within the fibers of the expanding hair shaft. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer a detection window for alcohol and drugs lasting up to three months. Hair collection is straightforward, moderately hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A segment of hair measuring 1.5 inches comprising about 200 strands (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) located nearest the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additions, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest utilizing a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen’s weight. Should scalp hair not be available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. When discussing head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The four key phases incorporated in the laboratory processing of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary processing of a sample into the lab’s system. This step includes ensuring that the sample was correctly sealed and sent, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any extra data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening includes an initial fast assessment for drugs of abuse. Screening offers a cost-efficient way to dismiss drug use in most samples, yet a positive screen requires confirmation to be court-admissible. Any samples showing presumptive positives during Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

Should a sample display a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the primary specimen and prepared for Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening among the most challenging methodologies to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is conducted via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning through Confirmation is scrutinized in accordance with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use spanning up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is notably challenging, making the results more precise.
  • Delivers historical insights: It can provide a timeline of drug usage across a period, not only recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs take approximately 5-7 days to become detectable within hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug screenings are generally pricier compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Variability in results: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although often referenced as “hair follicle tests,” the analysis is of the hair strand itself, not the subsurface hair follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
