Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug analyses in Croydon, Pennsylvania. For those requiring hair drug or alcohol assessment, our specialists are proficient in this branch, with facilities nationwide ready to conduct such tests. Generally, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown, but body hair can be analyzed instead. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be customized for other needs.

Recently, the preference for drug testing has increasingly favored hair follicle analysis. This method is now required by various employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals as a substitute for the traditional urine test. Employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, along with courts and probationary individuals, find hair follicle tests beneficial. They offer a superior detection period of drug use, typically up to 90 days, are collected under observation, and are difficult to falsify. Nonetheless, for detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain highly precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has garnered recognition as an effective approach for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as a historical record for alcohol and other substances by capturing biomarkers within the strands as they grow. By collecting samples near the scalp, hair can offer a detection window of up to 3 months for drugs and alcohol. Collecting hair is straightforward, difficult to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

Obtaining a 1.5-inch segment comprising approximately 200 hair strands (around the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg, which is the optimal sample size for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be taken. When we mention head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair alone. Body hair refers to all other types, including facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The key phases in the lab processing of drug test results include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the first phase where a sample is processed into the lab's system. This involves ensuring the sample is properly sealed and shipped, assigning it a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is a preliminary method for detecting drug abuse. While it economically rules out drug use for most samples, any positive screen must be confirmed for legal admissibility. Any samples testing presumptively positive in Screening require additional confirmation.

For samples that test presumptively positive in Screening, additional hair is taken from the initial specimen for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from the hair at a lower concentration than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The full lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed per both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have shorter detection periods.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is notably tough, ensuring more reliable outcomes.
  • Tracks drug usage patterns: It can reflect use patterns over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs generally become detectable in hair after 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier compared to other testing methods.
  • Result fluctuations: Variables like hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: While commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair strand and not on the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
