Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Dewart, Pennsylvania. Specializing in hair tests for drugs and alcohol, our centers nationwide are ready to perform these tests. Usually, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is needed, sourced from either the head or body. Hair testing options include standard drug, alcohol/ETG, or tailor-made analyses.

Over recent years, the adoption of hair follicle drug testing has increased significantly. Various employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse specialists prefer hair testing over the conventional urine test. This testing method is favored by those with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and probationary programs. Key advantages include an extended detection timeframe, which can span up to 90 days, using a monitored collection approach, making it very difficult to deceive. Nonetheless, for detecting drug use within five days, urine tests remain reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of alcohol and drug intake by encapsulating biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When collected near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection period of up to roughly three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to falsify, and easy to transport.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of roughly 200 strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) near the scalp, will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for testing and verification. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or tests exceeding ten panels, a specimen amount of 150mg is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler's scale for weighing the specimen. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent volume of body hair can be used. In the context of head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair alone. Body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial stage of processing a sample within a lab's system. This step involves confirming that the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While it is a cost-efficient approach to excluding drug use in most samples, a positive screening result must be validated to be valid in legal contexts. Any samples that show a presumptive positive in Screening need subsequent confirmation.

Should a sample exhibit a presumptive positive at the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen for further Extraction. During this stage, drugs are removed from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most complex methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The full laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments can reveal drug use for as long as 90 days, compared to urine tests that have a more limited detection timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is exceedingly challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical usage data: It reveals a timeline of drug use over a span, rather than just recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth discrepancies can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Despite often being termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Dewart, PA
When compared to urine tests, hair follicle testing offers greater accuracy in identifying substance use. While urine tests have a shorter detection window, hair tests provide insights into drug use over an extended period, typically up to 90 days. This broader scope of detection allows a more comprehensive view of an individual's substance history.

Furthermore, hair testing is difficult to manipulate, reducing the risk of falsified results. The observable collection process ensures sample integrity, making it an invaluable tool for employers and professionals needing reliable substance use verification.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection Window in Dewart, PA
Hair follicle testing stands out due to its extended drug detection window of up to 90 days. This advantage provides employers with a detailed account of an individual's drug use history, allowing more informed hiring decisions. Unlike shorter-term tests, the longer window offers comprehensive insights into an applicant's lifestyle choices.

Employers benefit significantly from this extended detection capability, gaining greater assurance about potential hires. By leveraging longer detection periods, organizations can better maintain workplace safety and uphold zero-tolerance policies.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
