In Dublin, Pennsylvania, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol screening, our expertise lies in hair testing, with facilities available in cities across the nation, including Dublin. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair are required, either from the head or body, to conduct our analyses. Our tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer various custom testing options.

In recent times, the preference for hair follicle drug tests over traditional methods has grown. Employers, judicial bodies, and substance abuse experts increasingly choose this test over the conventional urine test. This method appeals to companies enforcing strict no-drug policies and courts overseeing probation. Its key advantage is a longer drug detection timeframe, typically up to 90 days, with an observation collection process. Yet, for detecting recent drug use within five days, urine testing remains more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now regarded as an essential method for identifying the use of drugs and alcohol. By capturing biomarkers within the hair's fibers, hair offers a prolonged history of alcohol and drug consumption. Hair samples taken near the scalp can reveal substance usage within roughly a three-month timeframe. The process of collecting hair is straightforward, not easily tampered with, and convenient for transport.

A segment of hair measuring 1.5 inches with roughly 200 strands (approximately equivalent to the width of a #2 pencil) cut closest to the scalp provides a sample of 100mg, which is ideal for both screening and confirmation purposes. For EtG, add-ons, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a sample size of 150mg is advised. It's best to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be inaccessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. In the context of "head hair," we're specifically referring to scalp hair, whereas "body hair" pertains to all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key stages in analyzing a drug test result in the lab include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning marks the sample's entry into the lab’s system, where proper sealing and shipment of the sample are checked, a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number) is assigned, and additional data entries lacking from an electronic custody chain are completed.

Screening acts as a preliminary examination for drug presence. Despite being economical for excluding drug use in most samples, a positive Screening result needs confirmation to be valid in legal proceedings. Any sample deemed presumptively positive during Screening requires further confirmation.

When a sample shows a presumptive positive at the Screening juncture, more hair is extracted from the original sample for Extraction. Drugs are extracted at much lower levels in hair compared to other mediums (such as urine or oral fluid), necessitating expertise in hair drug testing.

LC/MS/MS, GC/MS, or GC/MS/MS methods are employed to confirm results from positive screenings. All samples showing presumptive positivity are cleaned prior to confirmation as necessary. The lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use over a 90-day span, whereas urine tests cover a much shorter period.
  • High accuracy: Tampering with a hair drug test is challenging, enhancing the reliability of results.
  • Historical insight: The test can outline a long-term drug usage pattern rather than just recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent usage: Drugs typically require 5-7 days to show up in hair.
  • Expense: Hair tests generally have higher costs compared to other testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Drug metabolite concentration can be influenced by factors like hair color and individual hair growth rates.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis involves the hair strand itself, not the follicle under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
