Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Edenborn, Pennsylvania. If a hair drug or alcohol test is what you require, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair analyses, and has facilities in every city across the nation ready to conduct a hair test. To perform a test, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is necessary on the head or body, as typically used. This method can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or allow for other specialized hair evaluations.

Recently, hair follicle testing has become increasingly common for drug screening. Numerous employers, judges, and Substance Abuse experts now mandate hair drug tests over the traditional urine tests. Employers enforcing strict no-drug policies, courts, and those on probation prefer hair follicle drug tests. The primary advantage of this test is its extensive detection time frame, up to 90 days, ensured through an observed collection process, making it almost foolproof. Yet, for drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests still prove most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective method for identifying alcohol and drug usage. Hair retains a long-term record of alcohol and drug presence by embedding biomarkers within its fibers. A hair sample taken close to the scalp offers around a 3-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and substances. The collection is straightforward, difficult to alter, and simple to mail.

A sample of 1.5 inches in length, consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (similar to the width of a #2 pencil), nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair: the perfect quantity for both screening and confirmation. For tests such as EtG, add-ons, or those involving over 10 panels, 150mg is preferred. Using a jeweler’s scale is advised for specimen weighing. If scalp hair isn't available, an identical amount of body hair may be collected. Here, head hair specifically means scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

In the drug testing laboratory process, the four crucial stages are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample is initially processed into the laboratory’s framework. This phase ensures the sample's seal and shipment are intact, a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number) is assigned, and any additional data not covered by an electronic custody chain is completed.

The Screening phase conducts a preliminary drug abuse check. Though Screening is a cost-efficient measure for excluding drug use in most samples, positive results require confirmation to be court-admissible. Any samples testing positive during Screening necessitate further confirmation.

For samples testing positive in Screening, extra hair is extracted from the primary specimen for the Extraction phase. This involves extracting drugs from hair at lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing quite challenging to execute.

Positive Screening results proceed to Confirmation through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptively positive samples are cleansed before Confirmation when necessary. The entire laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes audits under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and adheres to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drugs for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection period.
  • Challenging to cheat: The reliability of hair drug tests is high, as manipulating results is extremely difficult.
  • Shows usage history: Provides a comprehensive overview of drug use patterns over time rather than just current usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs take roughly 5-7 days to manifest in hair.
  • Higher cost: Hair drug testing is generally pricier than alternative methods.
  • Result variations: Variables such as hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence the concentration of drug metabolites.

Note: While commonly called "hair follicle tests", the actual analysis focuses on the hair strand itself, not the follicle existing under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
