Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive drug tests using hair follicles in Ernest, PA. When a drug or alcohol hair test is required, Accredited Drug Testing is a specialist and has testing centers in every city across the nation to conduct these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body can be utilized. Hair samples can be evaluated for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored testing options.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly involved hair follicle drug tests. Many employers, legal institutions, and substance abuse experts now opt for hair testing over urine analysis. These tests are favored by employers with zero-tolerance for drug use, courts, and probation departments. One major advantage is hair follicle tests' extended detection time, reaching up to 90 days, with samples collected under observation and nearly impossible to tamper with. However, for recent drug use, within the last five days, urine tests remain the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an influential approach for identifying both drug and alcohol consumption. Hair acts as a repository for long-term consumption records by encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair. When procured nearest the scalp, it can present a detection timeframe of nearly three months for alcohol and other substances. Collection is straightforward, manipulation is relatively challenging, and shipping is simple.

Collecting a 1.5-inch segment of about 200 hair strands (roughly the girth of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg, which is optimal for examination and verification. For EtG assessments, additions, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale for specimen weighing is recommended. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent volume of body hair may be used. Head hair refers exclusively to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary phases in lab processing for a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

In Accessioning, a sample is initially processed into the lab's system, ensuring correct sealing and shipment, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any data not available through an electronic custody chain.

Screening includes a preliminary inspection for abused drugs. Although cost-efficient for ruling out drug use in most samples, a positive screen warrants confirmation for court admissibility. Any samples tentatively positive after Screening require further confirmation.

Should the Screening phase yield a presumptive positive, additional hair from the initial sample is prepped for Extraction. This process isolates drugs from hair at a much lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), hence hair drug testing poses a higher challenge.

Confirmation for any positive found in Screening is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Before verification, all presumptive positive samples are cleansed as necessary. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Capable of identifying drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a reduced detection span.
  • Challenging to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is highly daunting, hence enhancing result precision.
  • Delivers historical insight: It uncovers a drug use trend over time rather than merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot reveal recent usage: Drugs appear in hair only after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs than other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Though commonly called "hair follicle tests", the test targets the hair shaft, not the scalp-based hair follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
