Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Evans City, Pennsylvania. If you're looking for a hair test for drugs or alcohol, Accredited Drug Testing is your go-to expert, with centers in cities across the nation ready to conduct hair testing. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head's crown or other body parts are suitable. Our tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a more common method for drug testing. Many employers, legal systems, and substance abuse specialists now favor hair testing over the traditional urine test. Hair tests are preferred by employers with stringent drug-free policies, courts, and those on probation because they offer a longer drug detection window of up to 90 days, involve direct observation collection, and are hard to bypass. However, urine tests are still best for detecting recent drug use within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now viewed as a highly effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The hair retains a comprehensive history of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair shaft. When cut near the scalp, hair can reveal a drug and alcohol detection period extending to about 3 months. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (roughly resembling a #2 pencil's width) closest to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, an optimal sample size for both screening and confirmation tests. For EtG, additional analyses, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, it's advisable to have 150mg of the specimen. We suggest weighing the hair sample on an accurate jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn’t available, a comparable amount of body hair can be used. When we mention head hair, it specifically indicates scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result entails four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary handling of a sample within a laboratory’s framework. This phase includes confirming that the sample was securely sealed and sent correctly, assigning an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any supplementary data entry not present in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an initial rapid drugs of abuse inspection. While Screening offers a budget-friendly option to negate drug consumption for most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation to be legally admissible. Samples with presumptively positive Screening results require a secondary verification.

If a specimen tests presumptively positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the original specimen for the Extraction process. During this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at concentrations significantly lower than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), explaining why hair drug screening is the most challenging technique to implement.

Confirmation of any positive Screening outcome is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples testing presumptively positive undergo washing before confirmation as required. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined in compliance with the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 compliance standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection period: Hair drug tests can recognize drug usage up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection duration.
  • Hard to evade: Cheating in a hair drug test is exceptionally tough, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insight: Capable of indicating a trend of drug use across a timeline, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Lacks recent use detection: Typically, it takes about 5-7 days for drugs to be noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests incur more costs compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Differences like hair color and unique hair growth rates can influence the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: While commonly labeled as "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle positioned beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing testing methods in Evans City, PA, hair follicle tests offer enhanced detection capabilities over urine tests. The undeniable advantage lies in their ability to uncover a wider spectrum of substance usage, thanks to a more extended detection window.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
