Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services throughout Federal, PA. Whether you require a drug or alcohol analysis via hair, our specialists are available across all cities nationwide to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is needed. These tests cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer tailored options to suit your needs.

The employment of hair follicle drug testing has surged in recent times. It is now favored by many employers, legal bodies, and Substance Abuse experts over traditional urine assessments. Companies with zero-tolerance drug policies, judicial systems, and probation officers benefit from the extensive detection window of up to 90 days. However, for usage detection within the past five days, urine analysis remains the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. The hair captures long-term substance use history by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When taken near the scalp, hair can reveal alcohol and other drug usage up to roughly a 3-month period. The collection process is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with approximately 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for analysis and validation. For tests like EtG, add-ons, or over 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is optimal. The specimen should be weighed using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is inaccessible, an equivalent amount of body hair can be taken. Head hair pertains solely to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial and axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four core steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves initially processing a sample into the laboratory's system. This step includes confirming the sample's proper sealing and shipment, allocating it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody.

Screening constitutes an initial rapid evaluation for abuse substances. While it is an economical method to exclude drug usage for the majority of samples, a positive screen demands verification to be court-admissible. Any samples with presumptive positives during Screening must undergo a secondary confirmation.

Should a sample show a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is retrieved from the original sample in preparation for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are isolated from hair in significantly lower concentrations than other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening uniquely challenging.

Any positive results from screening are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumed positive samples are washed before confirmation as necessary. The comprehensive lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is assessed under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and holds accreditation under ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug examinations can trace drug use for as long as 90 days, which surpasses the shorter detection period of urine tests.
  • Low likelihood of deception: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Historical data provision: It demonstrates a usage pattern over time, rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to pinpoint recent use: It generally takes 5-7 days before substances are detectable in the hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug examinations typically carry a higher price than other testing methodologies.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Though commonly called "hair follicle tests", it is the hair strand and not the hair follicle beneath the scalp that gets examined.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Federal, PA, hair follicle testing proves superior to urine tests. Unmatched benefits include a broad detection period and difficult-to-alter samples. Unlike traditional urine tests, hair analyses reveal more extended substance use history, ensuring better detection accuracy and reliability. This capacity to provide a long-term insight makes hair testing the preferred option.

Extended Detection Window

Offering a robust detection period of up to 90 days, hair follicle testing in Federal, PA empowers employers with a comprehensive overview of an individual's drug use history. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
