Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Fernway, Pennsylvania. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol examination, our specialization in hair testing comes with locations across all cities nationally to conduct assessments. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is needed. Tests analyze for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or customized options.
In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have become a more prevalent choice for drug testing procedures. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse experts now prefer hair drug tests over the standard urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and individuals on probation utilize these tests. The most significant advantage is the extended detection period of up to 90 days, collected under observation, and being exceedingly difficult to evade. However, urine tests continue to provide the most accuracy when detecting usage within the last 5 days.

Hair analysis has evolved into a credible method for identifying alcohol and drug consumption. Hair captures a timeline of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the growing hair fibers. When sampled close to the scalp, hair can potentially provide a detection period of around three months for alcohol and other substances. Hair is easy to gather, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.
A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches and consisting of approximately 200 strands (roughly the diameter of a #2 pencil) taken nearest to the scalp ensures 100mg of hair—the optimal sample size for testing and verification. For EtG, enhancements, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample is suggested. If scalp hair is not present, a comparable amount of body hair can be used. The term head hair specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).
Process Overview
The drug testing laboratory procedure encompasses four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.
Accessioning involves the introduction of a sample into a lab’s system, ensuring the sample is appropriately sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry that an electronic chain of custody system may omit.
Screening involves a preliminary examination for drug abuse. Screening is an economical method to eliminate drug usage in most samples, but a positive screen must be verified for court admissibility. Any samples that test positive in Screening need secondary confirmation.
Should a sample test positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the main sample for the Extraction phase. In this phase, hair undergoes extraction of drugs at a concentration substantially lower than other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing is notably complex.
Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All positive samples undergo a washing process prior to confirmation as warranted. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning through to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Note: Despite often being termed "hair follicle tests," the test evaluates the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.
