Accredited Drug Testing provides all-inclusive hair shaft drug analyses in Forest Grove, Pennsylvania. If a hair drug or alcohol evaluation is necessary, Accredited Drug Testing has expertise in hair examinations, with testing sites available in every city across the country capable of conducting such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body may be used. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair assessments.

Recently, the approach to drug screening has increasingly involved hair follicle examinations. Numerous employers, legal bodies, and addiction specialists prefer hair drug tests to traditional urine analyses. Hair follicle tests are employed by firms enforcing strict drug-free policies, courts, and probationary individuals. The major advantage of a hair test is its ability to detect drug consumption over a longer duration, approximately 90 days, collected under observed conditions, making tampering nearly impossible. Yet, for detecting substance use within the past five days, urine tests remain the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended history of substance use by trapping biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. When gathered near the scalp, hair can deliver up to roughly a 3-month detection period for alcohol and other drugs. Hair is easy to collect, challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample of about 200 hair strands (comparable to the width of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest weighing the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't accessible, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. When referencing head hair, we mean scalp hair specifically. Body hair denotes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary phases in laboratory processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the primary handling of a sample within a lab’s framework. It entails ensuring the sample was properly sealed and transported, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an initial swift check for potential drug abuse. Although Screening offers a cost-effective method to eliminate drug usage in most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation to hold up in court. Any samples that are presumptively positive in Screening mandate a secondary confirmation.

When a sample is presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is drawn from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. At this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a far lower concentration than in other techniques (ex. urine or oral fluid), underscoring the complexity of hair drug testing.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is implemented via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive specimens are cleaned before confirmation as necessary. The entire lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 benchmarks.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests detect drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection span.
  • Challenging to falsify: It is exceedingly difficult to deceive a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It provides a pattern of substance use over time, beyond just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other drug testing methods.
  • Inconsistent results: Factors like hair color and individual growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
