Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug analysis in Fox Run, Pennsylvania. If a hair or alcohol analysis is required, our expertise lies in hair testing, and we boast facilities across cities nationwide ready to conduct such tests. Normally, 1.5 to 2 inches of crown or body hair is required. Hair analyses can assess the presence of drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for other analyses.

Lately, the trend in drug evaluations has increasingly favored hair follicle testing. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse counselors demand a hair analysis over conventional urine testing. This method is favored by employers enforcing strict no-drug policies, the judicial system, and probation officers. The notable advantage being its extensive 90-day detection window, with secure, monitored collection making deception nearly futile. However, for detecting recent (5-day) drug usage, urine tests remain optimal.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying substance use. By capturing biomarkers in the fibers of a growing hair strand, hair offers an extended history of drug and alcohol consumption. When obtained near the scalp, hair enables a detection timeframe of up to roughly 90 days for substances. Hair collection is straightforward, difficult to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches containing around 200 hairs (approximately the diameter of a #2 pencil) from near the scalp yields 100mg, ideal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, extra tests, or panels above 10, 150mg is suggested. It’s advisable to weigh the sample using a jeweler's scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair can be gathered. "Head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair, while "body hair" includes other types (facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab procedure for drug test results involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step of integrating a sample into the lab's system, which includes verifying proper sealing and dispatch, assigning a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number) randomly, and completing any extra data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening provides an initial, swift assessment for drug misuse. Though cost-efficient for excluding drug use in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation for court admissibility. Samples that test positive in Screening must undergo further verification.

For samples presumed positive in the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted and readied for Extraction. Drugs are removed from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening notably challenging.

Confirmation of positive screening outcomes is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Positive samples are cleaned before confirmation if needed. The lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair accreditation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug assays can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter timeframe.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is notably difficult, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical data: It offers a timeline of drug consumption over time, unlike recent use detection alone.

Limitations:

  • No recent use detection: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is generally costlier than other drug screening methods.
  • Results variability: Elements like hair color and growth variability can impact metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: While sometimes called "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
