In Geigertown, Pennsylvania, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. Whether it’s for drug or alcohol analysis, our expertise in hair testing is complemented by our nationwide network of testing centers. Typically, at least 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is necessary from the crown or body. Hair tests offer analysis for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other custom testing needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become more prevalent in drug testing practices. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals are favoring this over standard urine tests. This method is popular among employers with strict no-drug policies, judicial courts, and probationary requirements due to its extensive detection period—up to 90 days. Hair tests require observed sample collection, which reduces cheating risks. However, urine tests still prevail for detecting substance use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged record of alcohol and drug exposure by embedding biomarkers within the strands of hair as they grow. Collecting hair near the scalp can yield up to a roughly 3-month detection timeframe for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is easy, harder to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch hair segment consisting of around 200 strands (akin to the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG additions and/or testing over 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen is suggested. If scalp hair cannot be collected, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used instead. When mentioning head hair, it specifically denotes scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair forms (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The process in a laboratory for obtaining a drug test result includes Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial entry of a sample into a lab’s system. It includes ensuring the sample was sealed and transported correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling out any extra data that an electronic chain of custody system doesn't cover.

Screening is an initial, swift test for drug usage. Though Screening is cost-effective for ruling out drug use in most samples, a positive result must be verified to be valid in court. Any samples with a positive screening result need a secondary confirmation.

If a sample tests positive in Screening, additional hair from the initial sample is prepared for Extraction. Here, drugs are removed from the hair at a much lower concentration compared to other methods (like urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug testing one of the most challenging methodologies.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS are used to confirm any positive screening result. All samples with a positive indication are thoroughly cleaned before confirmation, when necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection time: Hair drug tests can identify drug consumption for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection duration.
  • Difficult to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, leading to more reliable results.
  • Delivers historical insight: This method can reveal a pattern of drug usage over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify immediate use: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to show up in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be costlier than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Factors such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: While the term "hair follicle tests" is commonly used, the analysis is done on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair Testing trumps Urine Testing in Geigertown, PA by presenting unmatched detection precision and reliability. While traditional urine tests are standard, the superiority of hair tests lies in their capacity to detect drug use more effectively.

With extended detection periods, hair tests provide a more comprehensive picture, proving invaluable for employers in search of disclosure and accuracy compared to conventional urine tests.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
