Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Gladden, Pennsylvania. If you require a drug or alcohol hair test, we specialize in this method and provide testing centers in all major cities nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is necessary, allowing analysis for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored testing options.

The preference for hair follicle drug tests over time has increased among employers, courts, and substance abuse experts, as they often choose this in place of standard urine tests. Hair tests are utilized by zero-tolerance employers, judicial systems, and those on probation due to their extended drug use detection timeframe, which is generally up to 90 days, and their almost tamper-proof nature. However, for recent drug use detection within five days, urine tests remain the most reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair captures a prolonged timeline of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strand. When obtained near the scalp, hair can reveal up to roughly a 3-month detection span for drugs and alcohol. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-proof, and easily shipped.

A 1.5-inch segment of about 200 hair strands (roughly the width of a #2 pencil) taken nearest to the scalp yields 100mg, which is the optimal sample size for screening and validation. For EtG, additional panels, and tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen. If scalp hair is not obtainable, a similar quantity of body hair is acceptable. Head hair refers strictly to scalp hair, while body hair includes all other types (such as facial and axillary hair).

Process Overview

Drug test result processing in the laboratory involves four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This step includes ensuring the sample was correctly sealed and sent, assigning an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performing any supplementary data entry that an electronic chain of custody system does not supply.

Screening serves as a preliminary swift assessment for drugs. While Screening is a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug use in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation for court admissibility. Any samples that show a presumptive positive in Screening need a secondary verification.

If during Screening a sample indicates a presumptive positive, additional hair is taken from the initial sample and set for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations than alternative techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is achieved via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The comprehensive laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug testing can identify drug use for as much as 90 days, in contrast to urine tests, which offer a briefer detection window.
  • Challenging to falsify: Cheating on a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, enhancing the accuracy of the results.
  • Displays historical usage: It reveals a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: It takes around 5-7 days for drugs to show up in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be more costly than other methods.
  • Results can vary: Factors like hair color and personal hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Despite the common term "hair follicle tests", the analysis concerns the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
