Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Harrison Township, Pennsylvania. Our expertise in hair testing extends nationwide, with testing centers available in all major cities. For hair testing, you typically need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body. This testing method can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other custom hair testing options.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly favored hair follicle drug testing. Employers, legal authorities, and substance abuse professionals are adopting hair tests over standard urine exams. Employers with strict drug policies, court systems, and probation requirements benefit from hair testing. Key advantages include a 90-day detection window and nearly foolproof monitoring, though for recent use within five days, urine tests prevail.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as a robust method for detecting drug and alcohol use. Hair traps biomarkers in the strands of growing hair, offering a comprehensive history of alcohol and other drugs. Hair samples taken close to the scalp can provide a detection window for up to roughly three months for alcohol and other drugs. Collection of hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample of around 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp results in 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or examinations exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It is recommended to measure the sample with a jeweler’s scale. When scalp hair is inaccessible, a comparable amount of body hair may be taken. The term head hair refers solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result includes four main phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial handling of a sample into a laboratory's system. This involves checking the sample's sealed and shipped status, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary swift examination for abuses of drugs. Although Screening is cost-effective for ruling out drug usage in most samples, any positive screenings require confirmation to be admissible legally. Samples with presumptive positives in Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

If a sample is considered presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and processed for Extraction. In this process, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other testing methodologies, such as urine or oral fluid, underscoring its complexity as a drug testing method.

Confirmation of any positive screening is conducted through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with initial positive results are washed before confirmation if necessary. From Accessioning to Confirmation, every detail of the laboratory process is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and is accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, compared to the shorter window of urine tests.
  • Testing integrity: Cheating on a hair drug test is extremely difficult, rendering the results more reliable.
  • Historical insight: Hair drug tests can reveal a pattern of drug use over an extended period rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Detection in hair takes approximately 5-7 days post drug use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be costlier than other methods of drug testing.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can impact the concentration of drug metabolites.

Note: Despite being termed "hair follicle tests", the test actually examines the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When it comes to drug testing in Harrison Township, PA, hair follicle methods consistently outshine traditional urine tests. Hair testing offers distinct advantages in detection accuracy and reliability. Employers looking for thorough drug screening find that hair tests provide a broader window of insight compared to urine tests. This method significantly reduces the chances of undetected substance use.

Many workplaces prioritize stringent drug use policies, and hair follicle testing aligns perfectly with such objectives. By comparing hair follicle tests with urine tests, it's evident that hair tests provide a much more comprehensive overview of an individual's substance history. This transparency helps employers make informed decisions about potential hires or current employees.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
