Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Heidelberg, Pennsylvania. For those requiring a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in hair testing, with facilities across all cities Nationwide that can conduct a hair test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body may be used. Hair tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or provide other tailored hair testing options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have become an increasingly common practice for drug testing. Employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse professionals are opting for hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are preferred by employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, judicial entities, and individuals on probation. The key advantage of a hair drug test is its ability to detect drug usage over a 90-day period, through a supervised collection process, and its high resistance to tampering. However, urine tests remain most effective for detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective means for identifying usage of drugs and alcohol. Hair offers an extended record of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. When gathered close to the scalp, hair can offer a detection window of up to about three months for alcohol and other drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg, the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair is not present, a similar quantity of body hair can be collected. The term head hair specifically refers to scalp hair only. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory process for a drug test result comprises four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary processing of a sample into a lab’s infrastructure. This step includes confirming that the sample was duly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any data entry that was not included in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While it is a budget-friendly method to rule out drug use in most cases, a positive screening must be validated for court admissibility. Any samples that show presumptive positives in Screening require further confirmation.

If a sample is presumptively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen and readied for Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from the hair in much lower concentrations than in other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening a complex methodology.

Verification of any positive screening outcome is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Samples presumptively positive are washed prior to undergoing confirmation as required. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning through Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for a duration of up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that offer a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to alter: Altering a hair drug test is highly challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical data: It can reveal a pattern of drug consumption over time, rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: It takes around 5-7 days for drugs to be apparent in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs compared to other testing methods.
  • Result inconsistencies: Elements like hair color and individual variations in hair growth may influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although frequently referred to as "hair follicle tests", the analysis examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Heidelberg, PA, hair follicle testing offers clear advantages over urine testing. A significant benefit is the extended detection period, which allows for the identification of substance use beyond the brief window of urine tests. The reliable nature of hair testing ensures a comprehensive understanding of an individual's substance history, which urine tests may fail to provide due to their limited detection times.

Superior detection accuracy sets hair follicle tests apart from traditional urine tests. This advanced method identifies substance use more reliably, reducing the risk of errors. In contrast, urine tests are more vulnerable to manipulation and can miss detection shortly after consumption. As employers seek dependable drug testing solutions, hair testing presents a more effective strategy for managing workplace safety and compliance.

Extended Detection Window

One of the primary reasons Heidelberg, PA, employers prefer hair follicle testing is its extended detection window. Unlike urine tests, which only capture drug use from recent days, hair tests can reveal substance use up to 90 days prior, offering a thorough view of a person's long-term habits. This timeframe enables employers to evaluate ongoing drug use, which aids in crafting informed employment decisions.

For those in Heidelberg, PA, the comprehensive drug detection capabilities of hair follicle testing are invaluable. By revealing a pattern of substance use over months, employers gain insights into an applicant or employee's lifestyle beyond the scope of recent activities. This helps organizations to make strategic decisions, ensuring their teams uphold a reliable standard free from substance influence over time.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle tests in Heidelberg, PA, greatly minimize method obstacles by providing a tamper-resistant testing option. The collection process reduces the chances of specimen adulteration, ensuring results that reflect true drug use. This robustness renders hair follicle testing a practical choice for situations demanding unquestionable accuracy and reliability.

Unlike some alternative testing methods, the integrity of hair testing is maintained due to its resilience against tampering. Individuals in Heidelberg, PA, can rely on this method's reliable defense against result manipulation—ensuring that the outcome provides an authentic reflection of the individual’s substance exposure without concerns of deception.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
