Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Kenhorst, PA. If you're seeking a drug or alcohol assessment using hair samples, our expertise in hair testing is supported by a network of testing locations across every city in the U.S. A minimum length of 1.5 to 2 inches on the scalp or body hair is generally necessary, and hair samples can be tested for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific requests.

Recently, the preference for drug screening has increasingly leaned toward hair follicle drug tests. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts are favoring hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Organizations with stringent anti-drug policies, legal entities, and probation services utilize hair follicle tests for their extended detection time of up to 90 days. While for recent usage within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is considered a potent method for identifying substance use, including drugs and alcohol. It encapsulates a long-term record of these substances by retaining biomarkers in the hair’s fibers as it grows. Collected near the scalp, this method can reveal drug and alcohol usage within a roughly 3-month timeframe. Hair collection is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and easy to transport.

An ideal specimen for evaluation and verification consists of a 1.5-inch segment of about 200 hair strands (approximately the dimensions of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp, amounting to 100mg of hair. For tests involving EtG, add-ons, or exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advisable. It's suggested to measure the specimen with a jeweler’s scale. If head hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. References to head hair mean scalp hair only. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory handling of a drug test result primarily consists of four stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial entry of a sample into the lab’s framework. The procedure confirms correct sample sealing and shipping, allocates a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any supplementary data entry not covered by an electronic tracking system.

Screening provides a preliminary rapid assessment for drug abuse. Although Screening can cost-effectively negate drug use for most samples, a positive result necessitates verification for legal acceptance. Samples indicating a presumptive positive during Screening require subsequent confirmation.

A sample assumed positive in Screening undergoes further Extraction processing with additional hair drawn from the initial sample. This stage involves extracting drugs from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), marking hair drug screening as the most complex methodology.

Positive results in Screening are confirmed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples testing presumptive positive are cleansed before confirmation, if necessary. Each laboratory step, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is conducted under the oversight of the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and follows ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can track substance use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter detection range.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is quite challenging, leading to more reliable outcomes.
  • Provides usage patterns: This test offers insights into drug usage over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs can take around 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing generally incurs higher costs than other methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Though frequently termed "hair follicle tests", this test examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
