Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Kenmar, Pennsylvania. If you're looking for a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise lies in hair testing, with centers across the nation ready to perform these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is needed. Hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly adopted hair follicle testing. Many employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts are choosing hair tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests cater to zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probation scenarios. The chief advantage lies in its extensive detection period, reaching up to 90 days, with an observed collection process that is hard to tamper with. However, urine tests remain the most accurate for recent drug use, within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair screening has gained recognition as a potent approach for unveiling drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as a lasting archive of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the maturing hair strand. When retrieved adjacent to the scalp, hair can deliver a detection span of up to roughly three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is an uncomplicated process, relatively resistant to tampering, and easy to mail.

A 1.5-inch segment of about 200 hair strands (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the perfect sample for initial screening and confirmation. For EtG, extras, and tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. We suggest weighing the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is absent, a comparable amount of body hair could be taken. When referring to head hair, we imply scalp hair solely. Body hair encompasses all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The procedural stages in laboratory analysis for drug test results include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning deals with the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This consists of confirming that the sample was properly sealed and transported, attributing a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entries not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening embarks on an initial expeditious check for drug abuse. Although Screening offers a cost-efficient way to exclude drug consumption for most samples, an affirming test is necessary to validate it in court proceedings. Samples denoted presumptively positive during Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If a sample is deemed presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are withdrawn from hair at notably lower concentrations than in other methodologies (ex. urine or oral fluid), thus rendering hair drug screening the most challenging method to conduct.

Confirmation of positive screening results is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Every presumptively positive sample undergoes cleaning before confirmation as dictated. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and adherence to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can recognize drug use for up to 90 days, contrasting with urine tests which offer a shorter detection period.
  • Highly secure: Cheating on a hair drug test is extremely arduous, thereby enhancing result accuracy.
  • Tracks historical usage: It can reveal a pattern of drug usage over time rather than only depicting recent use.

Limitations:

  • Can’t detect recent consumption: It necessitates about 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result fluctuations: Aspects like hair color and personal hair growth variations may influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: While commonly identified as "hair follicle tests", the test scrutinizes the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
