Delivering extensive hair follicle drug testing, Accredited Drug Testing caters to Laflin, Pennsylvania. Whenever a hair or alcohol test is required, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair analysis with centers placed across every city Nationwide, capable of executing such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of crown hair or body hair may suffice. Analyzing hair, tests cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

Hair follicle testing has become increasingly prominent in drug testing approaches recently. Employers, courts, and addiction professionals now favor hair tests over standard urine screens. Strict no-drug-use policies drive the demand for hair follicle tests for employers, courts, and probation monitors, offering longer detection—up to 90 days—through observation, resisting tampering effectively. Despite this, urine tests remain more precise for recent 5-day drug use.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol use. By capturing biomarkers within the fibers of growing hair strands, hair gives a prolonged history of substances like alcohol and drugs. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer up to a 3-month detection period for these substances. Hair is easy to gather, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of around 200 hair strands (the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the ideal sample size for evaluation and validation. For EtG, additional options, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing. If scalp hair is not available, a similar amount of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair covers all other types (facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab’s drug test result processing involves four main steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the first step where a sample is processed in a lab's system. This step ensures the sample is sealed and shipped correctly, assigns a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completes any missing data not included in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a rapid initial assessment for drug abuse. Although Screening is an economical approach to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive result must be confirmed for legal admissibility. Samples indicated as presumptively positive in Screening require further verification.

For samples deemed presumptively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is used from the original sample to prepare for Extraction. In this stage, drugs are drawn out from hair at much lower levels than other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to carry out.

Verification of any positive Screening results is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. All samples with indications of positivity undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The entire lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is reviewed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to manipulate: Tampering with a hair drug test is extremely difficult, ensuring more precise results.
  • Yields historical information: It displays a drug use pattern over time, rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent use: Drugs take around 5-7 days to show up in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: The test commonly called a "hair follicle test" actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
