Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Lavelle, Pennsylvania. If your need is specifically for a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair analysis and has facilities in cities nationwide equipped to conduct such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is required. Our tests can assess drug use, alcohol/ETG, or other personalized options.

There has been an increasing preference for hair follicle drug tests over recent years. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals are opting for hair tests instead of the traditional urine test. A zero-tolerance policy on drug use often prompts employers, courts, and probation services to employ this method. The main advantage is that hair follicle tests detect drug use over a longer period of up to 90 days, conducted under observation, and are nearly cheat-proof. However, for drug use within the last five days, urine tests remain most effective.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has become recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of substances by locking biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer up to a near 3-month detection period for alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion of around 200 hair strands (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the perfect amount for both screening and confirmation processes. For tests like EtG add-ons or those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is advisable. We advise using a jeweler's scale for weighing the sample. If scalp hair cannot be used, a comparable amount of body hair may be obtained. By head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The process for laboratory analysis of a drug test result includes four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial steps of processing a specimen into a lab's system. This step comprises ensuring the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any extra data entry not available through an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of a preliminary swift check for drugs. Although Screening is an economical approach to dismiss drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be validated to be permissible in legal cases. Any presumptively positive samples from Screening necessitate subsequent confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. In this stage, substances are isolated from hair at a lower concentration than other methods (e.g. urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening among the most challenging methodologies to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screen outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Every presumptively positive sample undergoes a wash before confirmation as required. The full lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and is accredited to ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection range: Hair drug tests can identify substance use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which possess a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to manipulate: It is very challenging to deceive a hair drug test, leading to more precise results.
  • Offers historical insight: It can illustrate a pattern of substance use over a timeframe, instead of just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot reveal recent use: It takes roughly 5-7 days for any drugs to be detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be more costly compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Differing outcomes: Factors like hair color and individual disparities in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug by-products in the hair.

Note: Although frequently termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

The advantages of hair follicle tests over urine tests are evident in their remarkable detection accuracy and reliability. In Lavelle, PA, these tests offer a superior alternative, capturing a broader history of drug use than traditional urine tests. Employers benefit from this broader detection scope, which facilitates better-informed decisions concerning potential hires and current employees.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
