In Lawnton, Pennsylvania, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. If you find yourself in need of a hair-based drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is your expert, with testing facilities across every city nationwide. Generally, you will need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or elsewhere on the body for analysis. Hair testing can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, and even provides other tailored testing solutions.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has gained popularity as the preferred method for substance testing. More employers, courts, and substance abuse experts are opting for hair tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are favored by employers enforcing strict no-drug policies, judicial systems, and probation officers. A key advantage of hair follicle testing lies in its prolonged period of detection, spanning up to 90 days, with results collected under direct observation and extremely hard to alter. Nevertheless, urine tests remain the most effective method for detecting recent drug use within the last five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair examination is now acknowledged as an efficient method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of alcohol and drug presence by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. If procured near the scalp, hair can offer a nearly 3-month assessment period for alcohol and other substances. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively difficult to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of around 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or analyses exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is recommended. We advise using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair is not present, a similar quantity of body hair may be sampled. When mentioning head hair, we mean scalp hair solely. Body hair denotes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key four procedures involved in the laboratory analysis of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the preliminary processing of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This entails confirming that the sample was appropriately sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening covers a preliminary fast inspection for drugs of abuse. Though Screening offers a cost-efficient means to dismiss drug use in most samples, a positive screen needs verification to be accepted in court. Any samples that are tentatively positive in Screening do need additional confirmation.

If a sample is tentatively positive in the Screening phase, more hair is retrieved from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a much lower concentration than in other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the most challenging technique to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All tentatively positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair drug tests can identify substance use for up to 90 days, while urine tests have a shorter detection period.
  • Challenging to deceive: It is notably challenging to cheat on a hair drug test, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Historical data provision: It can display a trajectory of substance use over time, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It requires about 5-7 days for substances to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are usually more costly than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: While often termed "hair follicle tests", the test actually evaluates the hair strand and not the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
