Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Loag, Pennsylvania. Whether you're seeking a drug or alcohol hair test, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair analysis, with testing centers across all cities nationwide capable of performing these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair are required from the crown or body. Hair analysis can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized testing needs.

Hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent in recent times. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts now prefer it over traditional urine tests. These tests are employed by employers with strict drug-free policies, legal entities, and individuals on probation. A significant advantage of hair follicle testing is its broader detection period, extending up to 90 days, ensuring accurate observation and diminishing opportunities for tampering. However, for detecting recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain optimal.

What it is, How it works

Hair screening is recognized as a vital method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a comprehensive timeline of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the strands of hair in growth. When sourced near the scalp, hair offers nearly a 3-month period for detecting alcohol and other substances. The collection of hair is straightforward, relatively challenging to tamper with, and convenient for transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches and containing roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the diameter of a #2 pencil) near the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the perfect size for both screening and validation. For EtG, additional tests, or panels exceeding 10, a specimen weighing 150mg is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler's scale to measure the specimen. In cases where scalp hair is not present, an equivalent amount of body hair can be gathered. When mentioning head hair, we specifically indicate scalp hair. All other types of hair (such as facial, axillary, etc.) are referred to as body hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the primary processing of a sample within a laboratory's system. This process includes checking that the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as an initial, rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Though Screening is an economical approach to rule out drug use in most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples that yield a presumptive positive during Screening require further confirmation.

If a sample is deemed presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen and prepared for the Extraction stage. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at a considerably lower concentration compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing is the most complex methodology.

Positive screening results undergo Confirmation through methods such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with a presumptive positive are washed before confirmation as required. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is overseen under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a more limited detection span.
  • Challenging to manipulate: It is notably difficult to manipulate a hair drug test, ensuring more accurate outcomes.
  • Reveals historical patterns: It can display a timeline of drug consumption over an extended period, rather than recent use only.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent usage: It takes roughly 5-7 days for substances to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests cost more than other types of drug testing.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the concentration of drug metabolites within hair.

Note: Though commonly called "hair follicle tests", the actual test examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Loag, PA, hair follicle testing surpasses urine tests with superior accuracy and reliability. Hair tests offer extended detection, identifying drug use up to 90 days, unlike the limited timeframe of urine tests. This ensures employers and institutions can confidently assess substance use history, minimizing the risk of false negatives and securing more informative results.

Extended Detection Window

Through hair follicle testing in Loag, PA, employers gain insight into substance use for up to 90 days. This extended detection window provides a thorough overview of an individual's drug history, aiding in well-rounded evaluations. Such long-term detection complements existing procedures, offering critical insights into behavioral patterns that shorter-duration tests might miss.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
