Employment, Court Ordered, Probation, Family

Operating out of Maitland, Pennsylvania, Accredited Drug Testing is your trusted provider for comprehensive hair follicle drug screenings. Whether it's drugs or alcohol you need to check for, our expertise lies in hair testing, and we have facilities all across the nation capable of conducting these tests. Generally, at least 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your scalp or from your body will be necessary. These tests can be tailored to detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific needs.

In the past few years, hair follicle drug tests are increasingly being utilized for screening. These tests are now often preferred by employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals over traditional urine tests. They are ideal for employers with zero-tolerance policies, probation cases, and legal situations. The main advantage of hair tests is their ability to detect drug use over a longer period, usually up to 90 days, making them difficult to cheat. However, for detecting recent drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a potent method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a comprehensive history of drug and alcohol use by embedding biomarkers in the fibers of the growing hair. Samples collected near the scalp can provide a detection span of up to three months for alcohol and other substances. Hair samples are easy to gather, relatively resistant to tampering, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch hair sample containing roughly 200 strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, optimal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional panels, or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is preferred. It's suggested to weigh the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable amount of body hair can be used. When we mention head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair refers to other hair forms (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step of inputting a sample into a laboratory’s protocol. It involves verifying the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completing any outstanding data entry omitted by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Though it is an economical method to rule out drug use in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation for legal acceptability. Samples showing presumptive positivity in screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

If screening yields a presumptive positive, more hair is extracted from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from the hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening one of the most challenging methodologies.

Confirmation for any positive screening result is conducted using techniques such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positivity are cleaned before confirmation as needed. From Accessioning through Confirmation, the entire lab process is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days compared to shorter windows in urine tests.
  • High accuracy: Cheating a hair drug test is very challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical insight: Provides a pattern of drug use over time, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: It takes around 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than other testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal hair growth patterns can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: The term "hair follicle tests" is commonly used, though the test examines the hair strand and not the under-scalp hair follicle.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Maitland, PA, hair follicle testing prevails over traditional urine tests with its remarkable detection accuracy. While urine tests may miss traces of drug use beyond a short timeframe, hair testing identifies substance use over extended periods, providing comprehensive insights into an individual's habits. This advanced accuracy ensures employers make informed decisions, minimizing workplace risks and fostering a safer environment.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Maitland, PA offers an extended detection window, spanning up to 90 days. This broad timeline allows employers to gain a thorough overview of an applicant or employee's historical substance use. As opposed to shorter detection periods with other methods, this comprehensive approach ensures a holistic understanding of an individual's past behaviors, aiding employers in making informed decisions.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Maitland, PA, hair follicle tests significantly reduce the likelihood of tampering. With this advanced method, the risk of adulteration is minimized, thereby ensuring the integrity and reliability of the testing process. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
