Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in McDonald, Pennsylvania. If you require a hair or alcohol screening, our specialized hair testing services are available at numerous centers nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your scalp or body suffices. These tests can detect drug use, alcohol/ETG, and other customizable hair testing solutions.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become more prevalent in drug testing protocols. Many employers, judges, and substance abuse experts now prefer hair tests over urine screenings. This method is favored by strict zero-tolerance employers, the legal system, and probation supervision. Its main advantage is the extended detection period of drug use, up to 90 days, with an observed collection process making tampering nearly impossible. However, urine tests remain the most precise for detecting recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. It offers an extended-term record by capturing biomarkers within the strands. Collected near the scalp, hair can detect substances for up to 3 months. It's easy to gather, hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of around 200 hairs (similar in size to a #2 pencil) near the scalp gives 100mg, the optimal amount for evaluation. For tests like EtG add-ons or those exceeding 10 panels, it's suggested to use 150mg. We suggest checking the weight on a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair isn't available, equivalent body hair can be used. "Head hair" refers only to scalp hair, while "body hair" covers all other types, such as facial or underarm hair.

Process Overview

There are four major phases in laboratory processing of drug test outcomes: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into a lab system, verifying proper sealing and shipment of the sample, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling in any missing data not captured by an electronic custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary check for drug abuse. It offers a cost-efficient means to exclude drug presence in most samples; however, a positive result requires confirmation for legal acceptability. Samples testing positive in Screening necessitate further verification.

When a sample tests positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted for the Extraction stage. Drugs are removed from hair at lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), making hair testing the toughest procedure.

Confirmation of positive screens is achieved via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, positive samples undergo washing as necessary. The full laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is examined under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair tests can trace drug consumption for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter span.
  • Hard to falsify: Hair tests are difficult to manipulate, thus yielding more reliable outcomes.
  • Yields historical insight: It illustrates a usage pattern over time rather than just recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Fails to spot recent use: Drugs become traceable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair testing is costlier than other methods.
  • Result variability: Hair color and individual growth differences can impact metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests," the assessment examines the hair strand rather than the follicle under the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in McDonald, PA
Hair follicle testing surpasses traditional urine tests by providing a more comprehensive detection period of drug use. While urine tests are best for recent consumption, hair tests reveal substance usage over a longer duration, making them more effective for long-term detection. This feature supports stricter enforcement of drug-free policies in workplaces.

The superior reliability of hair testing also makes it extremely challenging to falsify results, unlike urine tests that may be tampered with. The extensive detection window up to 90 days further ensures earlier instances of substance abuse do not go unnoticed. Consequently, this minimizes risks for employers and enforces a robust drug-free environment.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection Window in McDonald, PA
Hair follicle testing provides an extensive detection window, unveiling drug use over up to 90 days. This longevity affords employers valuable insight into a candidate or employee’s drug habits, significantly extending beyond the limited timeframe offered by urine tests. Such comprehensive data is crucial in maintaining a safe and compliant workplace.

By encompassing a wider span of time, hair follicle testing allows for a thorough review of an individual's drug history. This capability is essential for businesses aiming to sustain rigorous drug-free policies, ensuring a clearer understanding of both immediate and past substance use patterns.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method in McDonald, PA
Hair follicle tests are notably tamper-resistant, providing a degree of reliability seldom matched by other methods. The difficulty in altering hair samples enhances the credibility of results, mitigating risks of forgery and inaccuracies. As a result, businesses can rely on this method for authentic and unquestionable drug testing outcomes.

This robust approach to sample collection and testing significantly diminishes potential sample adulteration. Hair follicle tests hold an intrinsic advantage in maintaining the integrity of the testing process, ensuring employers receive genuine and dependable results to inform their decisions.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
