Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive solutions for hair follicle drug exams in Mingoville, Pennsylvania. If a hair-based drug or alcohol test is what you're looking for, Accredited Drug Testing is the expert in hair analysis with centers available nationwide to conduct these assessments. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body can be used. Hair analysis can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer other tailored testing services.

Over the past few years, there has been an uptick in the adoption of hair follicle drug testing methods. It's becoming the go-to test for employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts, replacing the standard urine test. Employers implementing strict no-drug policies, judicial systems, and probationary programs now often prefer the hair test. Its main advantage lies in its extended detection timeline, typically up to 90 days, collected under direct supervision and virtually foolproof against cheating. Despite this, testing for drugs consumed in the past five days is still best with a urine test.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair captures a long-term record of these substances by embedding biomarkers in the strands that are growing. When taken close to the scalp, hair can offer an approximate 3-month window for detecting drugs and alcohol. Hair is easy to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample size of 1.5 inches consisting of around 200 hair strands (about the width of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg, which is the ideal sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, extras, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen. If there is no scalp hair, a matching quantity of body hair can be obtained. When discussing head hair, we refer exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair types (such as facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The primary steps in lab processing of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial handling of a sample in a lab's system. This involves checking if the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening involves a preliminary rapid assessment for abused drugs. Although Screening is a cost-efficient way to exclude drug use in most samples, any positive screening results must be confirmed to hold up in court. Samples that are tentatively positive in Screening require a subsequent confirmation.

Should a sample be tentatively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair from the initial specimen is prepped for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations than in methods like urine or oral fluid, making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation for any positive screening outcome is conducted by GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that are tentatively positive are washed before confirmation if necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug testing can identify drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Challenging to compromise: It's extremely hard to tamper with a hair drug test, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insight: It can reveal a pattern of drug use over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth may influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
