Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle substance testing throughout Monroe, Pennsylvania. If you're in need of hair-based drug or alcohol assessment, our expertise covers hair analysis, with facilities available in cities across the nation. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your crown is needed, though body hair may also be viable. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

In recent times, drug testing approaches have increasingly incorporated hair follicle analyses. Many organizations, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts prefer hair testing over traditional urine methods. Hair analysis is chosen by employers with strict anti-drug policies, by courts, and for those on probation. The chief advantage is an extended detection timeframe for drug use, generally up to 90 days, with observed collection ensuring accuracy. Nevertheless, for detecting recent use within five days, urine remains most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures biomarkers within the fibers of the extending hair strands, providing a prolonged timeline of alcohol and drug usage. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer roughly a 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for testing and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest measuring the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, a comparable amount of body hair can be used. When discussing head hair, it pertains to scalp hair alone. Body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab processing of a drug test result involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the primary handling of a sample into a lab's system. This comprises verifying the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and entering any supplementary data not included in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial swift examination for abused drugs. While Screening offers a cost-efficient method to exclude drug usage for most samples, a positive screening must be confirmed for court admissibility. Any samples that show a presumptive positive in Screening need an additional confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, extra hair is extracted from the initial specimen and readied for Extraction. At this stage, hair drugs are extracted at a significantly lower concentration than in other approaches (ex. urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening a notably challenging methodology to conduct.

Any positive screening outcome is validated through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positives are washed before confirmation as necessary. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to tamper with: It's quite challenging to deceive a hair drug test, enhancing accuracy of results.
  • Offers pattern data: It can demonstrate a usage trend over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect immediate usage: It requires about 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Elements such as hair color and personal variations in hair growth can influence metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
