In Morton, Pennsylvania, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screenings. Whether you're looking for hair drug or alcohol tests, our centers nationwide specialize in performing these analyses. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is required. Our hair testing options can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored to specific needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a more common method for substance screening. Employers, legal systems, and substance abuse professionals are opting for hair tests over traditional urine tests. These tests are preferred by organizations with stringent no-drug policies, courts, and probation services. One key advantage is their extended detection capability of up to 90 days, making them hard to falsify. Yet, urine tests remain more effective for recent drug use within a 5-day frame.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method to detect drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a long-term record of these substances by embedding biomarkers within its growing strands. When gathered near the scalp, hair can reveal substance use over a period of roughly three months. It's easy to obtain, hard to tamper with, and simple to send.

A 1.5-inch cut consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (around the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg, which is the perfect quantity for analysis and confirmation. For EtG, extras, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen size of 150mg is advised. It's best to measure this specimen using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. When we mention head hair, it specifically means scalp hair. Body hair includes other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key stages in the lab processing of a drug test are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes introducing a sample into a lab's system. It ensures the sample is adequately sealed and transported, assigns a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes remaining data logging not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening performs a preliminary check for drug abuse. Although cost-effective for excluding drug presence in most samples, a positive finding must be confirmed for legal proceedings. Presumptive positives from Screening require subsequent confirmation.

For samples flagged as presumptively positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the initial sample for further processing. Drugs are then extracted from hair at a significantly lower level than in other testing methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), emphasizing the complexity of hair drug analysis.

Confirmation of a positive test is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Every presumptive positive sample undergoes pre-confirmation washing as necessary. The complete lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is audited under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug tests trace drug use for up to 90 days, unlike the shorter window in urine tests.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is considerably challenging, ensuring more reliable outcomes.
  • Offers timeline data: It provides insight into drug use patterns over time, instead of just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Typically, hair drug tests are costlier than other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences may impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Referred to as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is done on the hair strand, not the follicle under the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Morton, PA recognizes the superiority of hair follicle tests over traditional urine screenings. While urine tests are useful, hair tests offer a broader detection window, identifying drug use over a longer period. Their reliability stands unmatched, with improved detection capability and fewer false negatives, thus ensuring that drug consumption is accurately tracked over weeks and even months.

The hair follicle testing method enhances precision and delivers undeniable accuracy in drug detection, making it the method of choice for strict policies. The broad detection window extends to about 90 days, providing an unparalleled overview of an individual's substance use patterns, vastly outpacing the shorter span of urine tests.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Morton, PA offers an extended detection period that effectively covers up to 90 days. This feature allows employers to gain a comprehensive understanding of their applicants or employees' substance habits, assisting in making informed decisions. By capturing a more extended history, hair analysis provides a broader picture, thereby assisting in maintaining workplace safety and compliance objectives.

Comprehensive Screening: This 90-day assessment period enables the identification of persistent substance use patterns. Such a lengthy window proves invaluable when assessing long-term substance behavior and ensures that past consumption is consistently monitored for workplace safety.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Morton, PA, hair follicle testing is recognized for its tamper-resistant attributes. This method significantly reduces the chances of sample adulteration, making it a trusted choice for accurate and reliable results every time. Compared to other methods, hair testing minimizes opportunities for deception, solidifying its reputation as a robust process for drug detection.

By relying on hair follicle drug tests, organizations can assure the integrity of their screening processes. The difficulty in altering or adulterating samples guarantees trustworthy outcomes, providing assurance for both the administrators and participants involved in the drug testing process.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
