Accredited Drug Testing provides extensive hair follicle drug testing services in Mount Penn, Pennsylvania. If you require a test for drugs or alcohol conducted with hair samples, our expert team offers this service through our nationwide centers. Generally, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches on the head or body is sufficient. Hair testing can detect substances such as drugs and alcohol or cater to tailored testing requirements.

In recent times, the use of hair follicle testing for drug detection has increased. Many organizations, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts prefer this over traditional urine tests. This type of test is suitable for zero-tolerance policies and those on probation, offering a more extended detection timeframe of up to 90 days, collected under supervision, making it difficult to tamper with. Nonetheless, urine tests remain more accurate for recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now perceived as an effective means to detect drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged record of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of growing hair strands. When collected near the scalp, hair can provide a detection window for alcohol and drugs lasting up to roughly 90 days. It is straightforward to collect, challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch hair sample comprising about 200 strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for analysis and validation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, collecting 150mg is advised. We suggest measuring the specimen on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. When we mention head hair, it refers specifically to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning marks the commencement of a sample's integration into a laboratory’s system. This phase comprises ensuring the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry not available through an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary swift examination for substances of abuse. Screening is a cost-efficient approach to exclude drug usage in most samples; however, a positive screen must be verified to be accepted in legal settings. Any samples that appear positive during Screening need further confirmation.

In the instance a sample appears positive at the Screening phase, more hair is retrieved from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. During this process, drugs are drawn from hair at a substantially lower concentration compared to other methods (like urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging technique to execute.

Confirming any positive Screening result is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that appear presumptively positive are cleansed before confirmation as required. The comprehensive laboratory process from Accessioning through to Confirmation is conducted in accordance with the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair directive and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can reveal drug usage for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is tremendously challenging, ensuring more reliable outcomes.
  • Offers historical insight: Provides a sequence of drug use over time, not limited to recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are generally pricier compared to other drug screening techniques.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth rate can influence drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Although frequently termed "hair follicle tests", the examination is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
