In North Springfield, PA, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle testing for drugs. Whether for drugs or alcohol, we are experts in this testing, with centers in every city across the nation ready to conduct the tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is required. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or cater to other custom options.

Hair follicle tests have become a preferred method for drug testing recently. Employers, judicial bodies, and substance abuse experts now often select a hair test over a traditional urine test. This testing is favored by zero-tolerance employers, judicial systems, and those on probation. Its key advantage is the longer detection period of drug use, up to 90 days, and its rigorous collection process makes it almost impossible to tamper with. However, urine tests remain most accurate for substances used in the last five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a significant means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended timeline of substance usage by capturing biomarkers within the strands of hair as they grow. When sampled near the scalp, it can provide a detection window for alcohol and drugs of up to around 3 months. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's thickness) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, ideal for screening and confirming. For EtG, add-ons, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. We suggest utilizing a jeweler’s scale for specimen weighing. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, an equivalent amount of body hair is acceptable. By head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Meanwhile, body hair encompasses all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory process for a drug test result encompasses four principal steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial step of incorporating a sample into a lab’s system. This phase includes ensuring the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any necessary data entry that isn’t provided through an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a rapid preliminary assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is an economical method to dismiss drug use in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation for court admissibility. Presumptively positive samples from Screening require further confirmation.

If a Screening phase result is presumptively positive, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen and readied for the Extraction process. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of hair drug screening.

Any positive screening result is confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS technologies. All presumptive positive samples undergo a washing process prior to confirmation as required. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have shorter detection periods.
  • Challenge to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is exceptionally difficult, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insight: It provides a timeline of drug usage over an extended interval, not just recent occurrences.

Limitations:

  • Incipient use detection: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be pricier than other drug testing alternatives.
  • Result variations: Variables like hair color and individual hair growth differences may influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand instead of the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in North Springfield, PA offers major advantages over urine tests. Unmatched detection accuracy is provided, thanks to their ability to identify drug use over extended periods of up to 90 days. While urine tests may only detect recent use, hair tests ensure a more detailed substance history, enhancing the reliability of the results.

Unlike urine tests, which can sometimes lead to false negatives, hair testing provides irrefutable evidence of drug use. This is especially beneficial for employers enforcing strong drug-free policies. By relying on hair tests, they minimize the risk of incorrect results, ensuring a safer and compliant workplace environment with stringent drug policies.

Extended Detection Window

Hair drug tests in North Springfield, PA offer an extended detection window, revealing drug use history for up to 90 days. This far surpasses traditional methods, providing thorough insights into an individual’s substance habits. Employers value this extended timeline for a complete understanding of substance use patterns in potential and current employees.

Through detailed insight into drug use over a considerable period, these tests prove invaluable for building a comprehensive view of an individual's habits. The extended window also aids in long-term monitoring for those in safety-sensitive positions, ensuring ongoing compliance with workplace policies.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing significantly minimizes the risk of tampering in North Springfield, PA. Security and reliability are key benefits, as this method is resistant to typical adulteration tactics. Collecting hair samples under direct supervision ensures the integrity of the testing process, providing results that are nearly impossible to compromise.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
