Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in North Warren, Pennsylvania. For those requiring a hair-based drug or alcohol evaluation, our specialty operations ensure availability nationwide with test facilities in all major cities. Typically, hair from the head or body, between 1.5 to 2 inches long, suffices for accurate analysis. Our hair tests are versatile, assessing drugs, alcohol/ETG, or bespoke testing options.

Hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become the preferred method in recent years. It's favored by employers, the courts, and Substance Abuse experts over traditional urine tests. Companies with strict zero-tolerance policies, judicial systems, and probation offices rely on its extensive applicability. A major advantage is the longer detection span, up to 90 days, making it nearly foolproof. For short-term detection within five days, however, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has grown to be recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair encapsulates a prolonged account of alcohol and substances by embedding biomarkers within the hair strand as it grows. When obtained near the scalp, hair can offer up to a 3-month detection period for alcohol and other substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches comprising roughly 200 hair strands (about the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for testing and validation. For EtG, supplemental analyses, and/or assessments exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is preferable. It's advisable to measure the specimen with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, a comparable amount of body hair can be used. When discussing head hair, we refer exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four primary stages in the lab processing of a drug test outcome: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial handling of a sample within a lab system. This involves ensuring the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing further data input absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary swift examination for substances of abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient method to dismiss drug usage in most samples, a confirmed screen is required for court admittance. Samples that are presumptively positive in Screening necessitate a further confirmation.

If a sample is initially positive in the Screening phase, more hair is taken from the primary specimen and readied for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of a positive screening result is performed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples suspected positive undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The whole lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection period.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Cheating a hair drug test is very difficult, resulting in more dependable outcomes.
  • Provides historical data: It delivers a timeline of drug use over a span of time, not solely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Variations in results: Elements like hair color and individual discrepancies in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Though sometimes called "hair follicle tests", the analysis examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle and urine tests in North Warren, PA, it's clear that hair testing offers superior benefits. With superior detection accuracy, hair tests are less prone to contamination and provide a more comprehensive analysis. It's the preferred choice for employers aiming for reliable results, thanks to its ability to detect drug use over a longer period.

Extended Detection Window

In North Warren, PA, one compelling advantage of hair follicle testing is its extended detection window. Hair tests can trace drug intake for up to 90 days. This lengthy detection period provides a comprehensive view of an individual's substance use history, offering employers invaluable insights into potential hires or current employees.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
