Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Oreland, Pennsylvania. Whether you require a drug or alcohol test utilizing hair, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in this area, with testing sites available in all cities nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is necessary for the test. Hair tests can be tailored to check for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific requirements.

Recently, the preference for administering drug tests has shifted towards hair follicle testing. Numerous employers, judicial bodies, and substance abuse counselors now opt for hair drug tests rather than conventional urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests are favored by employers enforcing strict no-drug policies, the judicial system, and individuals under probation terms. The main advantage of hair follicle drug tests is their extended detection window, which can reach up to 90 days, obtained through a supervised procedure that is nearly impossible to tamper with. Nevertheless, for identifying recent drug use within a five-day period, urine tests remain the most precise method.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a significant method for identifying the presence of drugs and alcohol. Hair offers an extended timeline of substance usage by encapsulating chemical markers within the fibers of the developing hair shaft. When taken close to the scalp, hair can offer a detection period for drugs and alcohol extending up to nearly three months. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising around 200 strands of hair (equivalent to the width of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the preferred quantity for testing and verification. For EtG, additional checks, and/or assessments beyond 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for precise measurement. Should scalp hair be absent, a comparable amount of body hair can be utilized. When we mention head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary four stages in lab analysis of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves processing a sample into the lab’s workflow initially. This step includes confirming proper sealing and shipment of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry the electronic chain of custody hasn’t covered.

Screening entails a preliminary rapid inspection for substances of abuse. Even though Screening can economically eliminate drug usage in most samples, a positive result must undergo confirmation to be legally valid. Presumptive positive samples in Screening necessitate a follow-up confirmation.

For samples that screen positive, more hair is retrieved from the initial collection for Extraction. Drugs are extracted from hair at lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), explaining the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of a positive screen is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are cleaned before confirmation if necessary. The whole procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated per both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair accreditation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards compliance.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug consumption up to 90 days back, unlike urine tests which have a shorter timeframe.
  • Tough to manipulate: It is challenging to falsify a hair drug test, enhancing the credibility of the results.
  • Gives historical insights: It provides a timeline of drug usage over time, rather than merely recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent intake: It takes around 5-7 days for drugs to show up in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result fluctuations: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence the level of drug metabolites found in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair shaft and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing offers distinct advantages over urine tests in Oreland, PA. Unlike urine tests, which are often susceptible to evasion and limited by shorter detection windows, hair tests span up to 90 days of drug use history. This allows employers to obtain a clearer understanding of an individual’s drug history, ensuring a more reliable assessment of potential employees or staff members.

Extended Detection Window

One of the most compelling benefits of hair follicle testing in Oreland, PA, is its extended detection window. Able to reveal drug use over as long as 90 days, hair testing surpasses the brief detection periods of other methods. This extensive timeframe allows employers and organizations an in-depth view of an individual’s substance use history, providing valuable insights and fostering informed decision-making.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Oreland, PA, hair follicle testing is recognized for its resistance to tampering. This method of testing minimizes risks associated with sample manipulation, delivering indisputable results. Hair tests are collected under supervision, reducing the possibility of sample adulteration and ensuring that results reflect true substance use without interference.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
