Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Penryn, Pennsylvania. If you require a hair drug or alcohol analysis, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched, with facilities available across all major cities. Typically, a hair sample between 1.5 to 2 inches from the scalp or body is needed. Our hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become increasingly common for drug screenings. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse counselors now often prefer these tests over urine testing. The appeal lies in their use by entities with strict no-drug policies and those overseeing probation. The central advantage is the extended detection window, generally lasting up to 90 days, making tampering nearly impractical. However, for identifying recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain preferable.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as a potent instrument for detecting the use of drugs and alcohol. Hair captures a historical record of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within its fibers during growth. When sampled near the scalp, hair offers a detection period of nearly three months for alcohol and additional drugs. The collection of hair samples is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient for shipping.

A sample of 1.5 inches, consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp, amounts to 100mg, the optimal quantity for both screening and confirmation processes. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a sample of 150mg is advocated. Using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample is recommended. If head hair is not accessible, an equivalent amount of body hair may be used. Head hair specifically refers to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses other types such as facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

There are four key stages in the lab processing of a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial entry of a specimen into the laboratory system. This step involves checking that the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and executing any extra data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary examination for the presence of drugs. Though Screening is an economical way to eliminate drug use for most samples, samples testing positive require confirmation for court acceptance. Presumptively positive samples in Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

When a sample is presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the original sample and processed for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are drawn from hair at concentrations much lower than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), marking hair drug screening as the most challenging method to execute.

Confirming any positive result from screening is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS methods. All samples that are presumptively positive undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated based on the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standard and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 norms.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests with shorter detection times.
  • Challenges in tampering: Cheating a hair drug test is notably difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Reveals historical drug use: It provides insights into patterns of drug use over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent use: It requires around 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Cost considerations: Hair drug tests tend to be more costly compared to other drug testing options.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can alter drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Often described as "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
