Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in River View Park, Pennsylvania. If a hair drug or alcohol test is what you require, our expertise lies in hair testing with testing centers available in every city nationwide. It's generally necessary to have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair available, with alternatives possible. Hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized options.

Over the last few years, hair follicle drug testing has become a more prevalent method. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals are increasingly opting for hair tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle drug testing serves a purpose for employers with zero-tolerance policies, judicial systems, and those on probation. Its major advantage is a longer detection window for drug usage, up to 90 days. Despite this, for recent substance use detection within 5 days, urine tests remain more reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Through the embedding of biomarkers within the strands of growing hair, it offers an extended timeline of substance use. When gathered near the scalp, hair delivers a detection range of up to around three months for alcohol and other substances. The procedure for collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient for shipment.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (equivalent to the width of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg, the optimal sample size for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, supplementary analysis, and/or evaluations exceeding 10 panels, it is advisable to obtain 150mg of the specimen. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for measuring the specimen. Should scalp hair be absent, an equivalent quantity of body hair is acceptable. By head hair, we denote exclusively scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other variants (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The procedure encompasses four fundamental stages in the laboratory handling of a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning marks the initial phase of a sample's integration into a laboratory's system, ensuring the sample's proper sealing and shipment, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing outstanding data entry absent from an automated chain of custody system.

Screening serves as an initial rapid assessment for the presence of drugs. Although Screening offers a cost-efficient approach for eliminating drug use in most cases, a confirmed positive screen is necessary for legal validity. Samples deemed presumptively positive during Screening require further verification.

Should a sample yield a presumptively positive result during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen for the Extraction stage. Here, drugs are separated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than alternative methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), attributing to hair drug screening being the most complex procedure to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screen results is executed by means of GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positive results are rinsed as needed prior to confirmation. The comprehensive lab process — from Accessioning through to Confirmation — undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standard accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug screenings can identify substance use for up to 90 days, contrasting with the reduced timeframe of urine tests.
  • High resistance to manipulation: It is notably challenging to manipulate hair drug test results, thereby increasing their accuracy.
  • Reveals historical patterns: It demonstrates a timeline of substance use over a duration, not solely recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Incapacity to identify recent usage: It generally requires 5-7 days for substances to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments are typically costlier than other testing procedures.
  • Result discrepancies: Variables like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly described as "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the underlying hair follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
