In Rouzerville, Pennsylvania, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug evaluations. If you require a hair drug or alcohol analysis, our specialization in hair testing, along with our nationwide centers, makes it convenient for you. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body will suffice. We offer tests for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other custom options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have gained prominence. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts increasingly favor them over standard urine tests. They are popular among employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probation scenarios. The major advantage is their longer detection period of up to 90 days and difficulty in cheating, though for drug use within the last five days, urine tests remain most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as a long-term archive of substances by capturing biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When collected near the scalp, hair can reveal up to a 3-month period of substance use. It is easy to gather, relatively tamper-proof, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising roughly 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for testing. For EtG, additional analyses, and tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. It is recommended to weigh the sample with a jeweler’s balance. If scalp hair is insufficient, an equal portion of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Processing Workflow

The main steps in lab processing a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves entering a sample into the lab’s system, ensuring it was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completing any extra data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial drug abuse check. While cost-effective for eliminating drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed to hold up legally. Samples that test presumptively positive in Screening need subsequent confirmation.

For samples presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted for further processing. In this phase, drugs are separated from hair at much lower concentrations than in other testing methods like urine, which makes hair drug testing more complex.

Confirmation of any positive screen involves methods such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptively positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The entire process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, adheres to both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Hair Drug Testing Pros:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can trace drug use up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a shorter timeframe.
  • High integrity: Hair tests are challenging to manipulate, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Historical insight: It can reveal a drug use pattern over time, beyond just recent consumption.

Cons:

  • Recent use undetectable: Drugs become detectable in hair around 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair tests are typically pricier than alternative methods.
  • Result variability: Hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence metabolite concentration results.

Note: The test often called a "hair follicle test" evaluates the hair strand, not the actual follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
