Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Salisbury, Pennsylvania. Whether it's for detecting drugs or alcohol, our expertise in hair-based testing is unparalleled, with facilities nationwide poised to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is required, allowing us to analyze for various substances such as drugs and alcohol/ETG through customized options.

The trend in drug screening has increasingly adopted hair follicle tests over the years. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts now prefer this method over the usual urine tests. Employers enforcing strict no-drug policies, courts, and probationers favor these tests. A significant advantage of hair testing is its extended detection ability, spanning up to 90 days, administered under supervision, minimizing deceit. Nevertheless, urine tests remain superior for identifying use within the recent five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has become recognized as an effective means for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of substances by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the emerging hair shaft. When trimmed near the scalp, hair can indicate drug and alcohol use over a period of roughly three months. Hair is easy to gather, comparatively resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising about 200 hair strands (roughly the circumference of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimum amount for analysis and validation. For EtG, supplemental examinations, and/or assessments beyond ten panels, 150mg of the hair is advised. It is beneficial to double-check the specimen's weight on a jeweler’s scale. In scenarios where scalp hair is not available, a corresponding amount of body hair might be obtained. Note that when we mention head hair, we are specifically referring to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair categories (such as facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The quartet of critical steps in the laboratory evaluation of a drug test result includes Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the step where a sample is initially entered into a lab's process. This step involves verifying proper sample sealing and shipment, assigning an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial swift examination for drug abuse markers. While Screening provides a cost-efficient method to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive outcome necessitates confirmation for legal acceptability. Any samples with a positive indication during Screening must undergo confirmatory testing.

When a sample shows a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. During this stage, substances are isolated from hair at notably lower concentrations than other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), which contributes to the complexity of hair drug testing methods.

Confirmation of any preliminary positive screening is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS procedures. Any samples presumed positive are subject to washing before confirmation if required. The laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited following the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and meets ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can sense drug consumption over a 90-day period, as opposed to urine tests which offer a shorter detection span.
  • Challenging to falsify: It is exceedingly challenging to undermine a hair drug test, thus enhancing result precision.
  • Captures historical usage: It can reveal a pattern of substance use over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: Drugs require approximately 5-7 days to become noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be more costly than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Variables like hair color and individual growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although commonly labeled as "hair follicle tests", these tests actually examine the hair shaft rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle testing with traditional urine testing in Salisbury, PA, the advantages become clear. Hair testing offers a higher level of detection accuracy due to its extended detection window. While urine tests focus on recent usage, hair tests analyze substance use over a prolonged period, thus providing a comprehensive substance use history.

Employers and institutions in Salisbury benefit from the superior reliability of hair testing. Unlike urine tests, hair tests are less prone to contamination and deception. In addition, hair analysis captures substance patterns more effectively, portraying a clearer picture of an individual's substance use behavior over time.

Extended Detection Window

The unmatched detection window of hair follicle testing in Salisbury, PA, provides a detailed analysis of drug use for up to 90 days. This extended period allows employers to gain deeper insights into an individual's substance history, aiding in making well-informed decisions. Traditional testing methods do not offer this comprehensive view.

In Salisbury, organizations benefit from hair testing's capacity to outline a thorough history of substance intake. Unlike other tests, which only reveal short-term use, this method reflects long-term patterns, supporting employers in maintaining a drug-free environment while identifying habitual drug users.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing in Salisbury, PA features a tamper-resistant approach that significantly reduces sample adulteration risks. By utilizing a process nearly impervious to cheating, test results become highly dependable and trustworthy, safeguarding the integrity of the testing process.

The tamper-proof nature of hair testing allows Salisbury employers to trust the results unequivocally. With its resilient sample collection and analysis process, attempts at deceit are easily circumvented, ensuring results remain steadfast and authentic.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
