Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Saltillo, Pennsylvania. When in need of a hair drug or alcohol examination, turn to Accredited Drug Testing, experts in hair testing, with locations across cities Nationwide ready to conduct hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is needed. Hair tests are versatile, capable of detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other custom options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a more common method for drug testing. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals increasingly select this over standard urine tests. Employers with strict anti-drug policies, courts, and those on probation often favor hair follicle tests. These tests boast a longer detection period, usually up to 90 days, collected under supervision, with minimal risk of tampering. For recent drug use detection, within the last five days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The hair accumulates long-term indicators of alcohol and other substances by embedding markers in the hair shaft. When hair is collected near the scalp, it can indicate a detection period of up to about three months for alcohol and other drugs. Hair sampling is easy to gather, relatively challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches that consists of about 200 hair strands (equivalent to the diameter of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for analytical screening and confirmation. For EtG enhancements and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. It is recommended to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, a similar quantity of body hair may be used. In references to head hair, we strictly mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair categories (facial, armpit, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four key stages in processing a drug test result in the lab: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the preliminary processing of a sample into the lab’s system. This step involves ensuring the sample is properly sealed and shipped, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any data entry not captured by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is a preliminary quick assay to detect drug abuse. While it is an economical method to rule out substance use in most samples, a positive result from Screening needs confirmation to be court-admissible. Any samples that indicate a preliminary positive result during Screening need secondary confirmation.

Should a sample indicate a presumptive positive during Screening, further hair is taken from the initial specimen for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are isolated from the hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (like urine or saliva), which contributes to hair drug testing being particularly complex.

To validate any positive Screening result, Confirmation is carried out through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleaned appropriately before Confirmation. From Accessioning through Confirmation, the entire laboratory process is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and conforms to ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection period: Hair drug tests can detect drug use for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests, which have a shorter detection window.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating on a hair drug test is very challenging, thereby enhancing result accuracy.
  • Reveals historical patterns: It provides a history of drug use over time, rather than only recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs take around 5-7 days before becoming detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is generally costlier than other drug testing methods.
  • Variability in outcomes: Elements like hair color and unique differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug traces in the hair.

Note: Despite the common term "hair follicle tests", it is the hair strand, and not the follicle beneath the scalp, that is analyzed.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
