Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Sligo, Pennsylvania. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing, with facilities across all cities in the nation equipped to conduct hair tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body may be sufficient. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be customized for other testing purposes.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have been increasingly utilized in drug testing procedures. A growing number of employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts are opting for hair-based tests over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict drug use policies, courts, and probation personnel value hair follicle tests for their extended drug use detection window of up to 90 days, collected in an observed manner, making them nearly foolproof. However, urine tests remain the go-to method for detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has increasingly become recognized as an effective method for identifying the use of drugs and alcohol. Hair offers an extended timeline of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of its growing segments. When taken near the scalp, hair can reveal up to roughly a three-month period of alcohol and drug consumption. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A hair sample of 1.5 inches consisting of approximately 200 strands (about the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and verification. For EtG, add-ons, and/or assessments over 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advised. It is beneficial to measure the specimen with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, a comparable quantity of body hair can be used. When discussing head hair, we are specifically referring to scalp hair alone. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key stages in the laboratory evaluation of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory's records. This step includes confirming that the sample was appropriately sealed and delivered, creating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry needed beyond what's provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of an initial rapid assessment looking for drugs of abuse. Although Screening offers a budget-friendly method to eliminate drug use in most cases, confirmation is necessary for any positive results to be legally accepted. Samples that indicate positive results during Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

If a sample is suspected positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen and set up for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are retrieved from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (like urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most complex method to carry out.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as needed. The entire laboratory operation from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair accreditation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standard accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for as long as 90 days, while urine tests offer a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating on a hair drug test is extremely difficult, which enhances the accuracy of the outcomes.
  • Offers historical insights: It can demonstrate a drug use pattern over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent consumption: It takes about 5-7 days for substances to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other drug testing options.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the concentration of drug metabolites within the hair.

Note: Frequently labeled as "hair follicle tests", the test actually examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Triumphs Over Urine Testing in Sligo, PA, becomes evident upon examination of accuracy and reliability. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
