Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug evaluations in Springdale, Pennsylvania. For those needing a drug or alcohol test through hair analysis, our centers nationwide, including every city, are equipped to deliver your testing needs. Most cases allow the use of 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair. The scope of hair testing encompasses drug detection, alcohol/ETG, and tailored testing solutions.

Recently, hair follicle drug evaluations have become more common in drug testing methods. Employers, legal systems, and professionals in substance abuse increasingly prefer hair tests over the conventional urine tests. Zero-tolerance workplaces, judicial systems, and probation requirements benefit from hair tests’ broader detection range of up to 90 days, which are supervised and resistant to tampering. Nonetheless, urine tests remain the gold standard for identifying usage within a five-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It offers a comprehensive history of substance usage by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair. When obtained from near the scalp, it can reveal alcohol and drug use for around three months. Hair is easy to collect, challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to send.

A 1.5-inch segment comprised of approximately 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) taken from the scalp gives 100mg of hair, which is ideal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional analyses, and/or evaluations beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. Consider weighing the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be gathered. When discussing head hair, we refer solely to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types such as facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The procedure for analyzing a drug test outcome in the lab involves Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample is initially processed into the laboratory system. This step entails verifying the sample was sealed and transported correctly, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a preliminary check for drug presence. Although Screening is an economical approach to exclude drug usage for most samples, legal proceedings require confirmation of a positive screen. Any samples showing a tentative positive result during Screening need further confirmation.

Should a sample appear positive in Screening, more hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction phase. This phase involves retrieving drugs from the hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug testing a complex procedure.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Samples with presumptive positives are washed before confirmation as necessary. The laboratory process from Accessioning through Confirmation is subjected to review under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and complies with ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter span of detection.
  • Reduced chance of tampering: It is extremely challenging to falsify a hair drug test, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Reveals usage patterns: It can indicate a history of drug use over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: Drugs require approximately 5-7 days to become evident in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually cost more than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Though frequently called "hair follicle tests", these tests assess the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
