Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive drug tests using hair follicles in St. Lawrence, Pennsylvania. Need a drug or alcohol hair test? We at Accredited Drug Testing excel at hair testing with centers available in cities across the USA ready to conduct tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is all that's needed. Tests can determine the presence of drugs, alcohol/ETG or be tailored for other requirements.

In recent years, hair follicle drug tests have become more prevalent in drug screening. Increasingly, employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts are opting for hair tests over traditional urine tests. These tests are ideal for employers with zero-tolerance policies, judicial cases, or probationers. A significant advantage is their ability to trace drug use over a longer period, up to 90 days. However, for detecting recent use within 5 days, urine tests are still superior.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol usage. Hair captures a long-term record of substance use by embedding biomarkers in the fibers of the growing hair strand. When collected from near the scalp, hair can offer an approximate 3-month detection window for drugs and alcohol. Collecting hair is straightforward, somewhat tamper-resistant, and simple to send.

A 1.5-inch section of around 200 hair strands (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for testing and confirmation. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or those exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. It is suggested to weigh the sample using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, a comparable quantity of body hair is acceptable. When mentioning head hair, it refers solely to scalp hair. Body hair denotes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four primary steps in the laboratory process of achieving a drug test outcome: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary processing of a sample within a laboratory's framework. This stage ensures that the sample was sealed and transported correctly, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any data entry that an electronic chain of custody system might lack.

Screening performs an initial rapid assessment for substance misuse. Although Screening is an economically viable method to dismiss drug usage in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation to be valid in court. Samples that are tentatively positive in Screening must have a secondary verification.

Should a sample emerge as presumptively positive during Screening, further hair is taken from the original sample for Extraction. During this phase, the hair is processed to extract drugs at markedly low concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), which accounts for hair drug screening being the most complex method.

Verification of a positive screening outcome is completed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples identified as presumptive positives are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is overseen under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair endorsement and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a shorter detection period.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Manipulating a hair drug test is quite challenging, thus yielding more precise outcomes.
  • Chronological usage data: It can illustrate a pattern of drug consumption over time, not solely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect immediate use: Drugs take an estimated 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the test evaluates the hair strand and not the sub-scalp hair follicle.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Testing Outshines Urine Testing in St. Lawrence, PA is due to its superior accuracy and reliability. Unlike urine tests, hair follicle drug testing provides a detailed insight into an individual's substance use history. With a longer detection timeframe, hair tests can uncover drug usage that might be missed by traditional urine tests, making them a more reliable solution for employers.

Hair testing is vital for ensuring workplace safety and upholding zero-tolerance programs. The comprehensive nature of hair tests means that they offer a holistic view of an individual's drug consumption habits, which is often not achievable through urine testing. This makes hair testing a critical tool in substance testing strategies.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection Window in St. Lawrence, PA promotes hair follicle testing because it provides an view of drug use over a more protracted span—up to 90 days. This prolonged detection capability is crucial for employers wanting to understand an individual's substance use history thoroughly. It ensures that companies are better informed about the applicants or employees before making employment decisions.

This in-depth screening can significantly impact hiring processes, ensuring that only drug-free candidates are employed. Hair tests' extended detection window makes them indispensable for organizations serious about maintaining a safe working environment.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
