Located in Sun Valley, Pennsylvania, Accredited Drug Testing is your go-to for comprehensive hair follicle drug analysis. Whether it's a hair drug or alcohol test you require, our specialty lies in hair testing with ample centers Nationwide, ready to conduct these evaluations. Typically, the need is for 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body. These examinations can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

Of late, hair follicle drug testing has gained prominence in the realm of drug detection. A variety of parties such as employers, judiciary bodies, and substance abuse specialists are gravitating towards these tests over classic urine analyses. This form of testing is favored by zero-tolerance workplaces, courts, and individuals on supervised release due to its extended detection reach of approximately 90 days. While it excels in long-term detection, urine tests prevail when pinpointing recent usage within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a potent resource for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair offers an extended timeline of alcohol and other drug activities by securing biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer up to roughly a 3-month period for detecting alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (about the size of a #2 pencil) near the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for testing and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or assessments beyond 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler's scale for weighing the sample. If scalp hair is unavailable, a similar quantity of body hair might be retrieved. When mentioning head hair, we mean scalp hair specifically. Body hair covers all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in lab processing of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a specimen into a lab's system. This comprises confirming that the specimen was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing data entry not included by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs an initial rapid check for abused drugs. Although Screening offers a cost-effective method to eliminate drug use for most samples, a positive screening must be confirmed for court relevance. Samples that are preliminarily positive in Screening need a subsequent confirmation.

For presumptively positive samples during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. In this step, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging methodology.

Confirmation of any positive screening finding is undertaken using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection period.
  • Challenging to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is very difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It can illustrate a timeline of drug use over an extended period, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Lacks detection of recent use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to appear in hair samples.
  • Expensive: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal differences in hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Despite being commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the actual analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When it comes to detecting substance use in Sun Valley, PA, hair follicle testing outshines the traditional urine tests due to its superior advantages. Chief among these is the extended detection period, which grants insights into up to 90 days of drug use history. This capability provides a fuller picture than mere recent use, unlike urine tests that focus on a fleeting timeframe.

The accuracy and reliability of hair testing stand out, ensuring fewer false negatives and positives. By trusting hair follicle tests, stakeholders avoid uncertainties and benefit from comprehensive data, making informed decisions about employees or potential hires.

Extended Detection Window

Employers in Sun Valley, PA, benefit greatly from the extended detection window of hair follicle testing. This unique aspect provides a glimpse into an individual's substance use spanning up to 90 days. Such thorough evaluation presents a broad view of an applicant's or current employee's drug history, aiding in more precise assessments of behavioral patterns.

The prolonged detection period surpasses other drug testing methods. Unlike brief detection windows of traditional tests, hair follicle analysis offers comprehensive insights, making it indispensable for employers seeking thorough evaluations.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing in Sun Valley, PA, offers a tamper-resistant method that stands firm against common adulteration tricks seen in other tests. The integrity of the sample remains intact, providing reliable and unquestionable data. Unlike urine tests, which can be manipulated, hair tests safeguard against tampering, ensuring trust in the outcomes.

By minimizing the risk of sample alteration, hair testing delivers findings that are both dependable and accurate. This security is crucial for employers and legal bodies who need to base decisions on unassailable data.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
