Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services to Swiftwater, Pennsylvania. Specializing in both drug and alcohol hair testing, our expertise spans across all major cities nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of scalp or body hair is required for testing. The analyses can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customized substances.

In recent trends, hair follicle testing has become a preferred method for assessing drug use. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts often favor it over traditional urine tests. These tests are crucial for organizations uphold zero-tolerance policies and for probationary observation. The primary advantage lies in their extended detection period, reaching up to 90 days, along with a straightforward observation-based collection process, minimizing the risk of tampering. However, for usage detection within a 5-day window, urine tests remain the most reliable.

What it is, How it works

Through its ability to detect both drug and alcohol consumption, hair testing has gained recognition as an effective method. The strands of hair, while they grow, encapsulate indicators of substance use, providing a comprehensive timeline of alcohol and drug activity. Obtaining hair from the scalp ensures the assessment of alcohol and other substances over a span nearing three months. Collecting hair is straightforward, moderately resistant to tampering, and convenient for mailing.

Securing a sample of 1.5 inches from roughly 200 hairs (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the perfect quantity for screening and validation. For EtG, supplementary tests, or analyses exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. We suggest utilizing a jeweler's scale for accuracy in specimen weight. If scalp hair is unavailable, the equivalent quantity of body hair is acceptable. References to head hair pertain solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses various other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The major procedures in processing a lab drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial task of incorporating the sample into the laboratory system. This step confirms the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any outstanding data entries absent in an electronic chain of custody framework.

Screening acts as a preliminary assessment for substance misuse. Although economical in identifying non-use in most samples, any positive Screening findings must be verified for judicial validity. Samples with potential positive results in Screening need additional confirmation.

When a Screening indicates a positive result, additional hair from the sample is prepared for Extraction. During Extraction, substances are obtained from hair at a concentration significantly lower than in other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), making hair drug analysis particularly intricate.

Positive results from Screening advance to Confirmation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Every sample with an initial positive is cleaned beforehand if necessary. The full laboratory sequence from Accessioning through Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair testing reveals drug use up to 90 days prior, while urine tests have a more limited detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating on a hair drug test is notably challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Captures usage trend: Offers a historical perspective of drug consumption over time, beyond immediate use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent activity: Drugs necessitate about 5-7 days post-use to appear in hair samples.
  • Expense: Typically, hair drug testing is costlier than other drug detection methodologies.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair pigment and individual differences in hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite levels.

Note: The term "hair follicle test" is a misnomer as the analysis examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the skin.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
