Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle testing services in Swissvale, Pennsylvania. Specializing in this method, our centers across all U.S. cities cater to anyone needing a hair drug or alcohol test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair suffices for this test, which is capable of detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other personalized analyses.

Lately, hair follicle testing has become more prevalent for drug assessments. This method is preferred by employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts over traditional urine tests. Hair tests are ideal for zero-tolerance workplaces, legal settings, and probation cases, given their long detection period of up to 90 days, observed sample collection, and limited potential for tampering. Despite this, urine tests remain more precise for recent usage within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the hair strand as it grows. Collected near the scalp, hair offers a detection span of up to about three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to gather, somewhat resistant to tampering, and simple to send.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches of approximately 200 hair strands (similar in width to a #2 pencil) close to the scalp yields 100mg, ideal for preliminary and confirmatory tests. For EtG enhancements or analyses exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen is suggested. If scalp hair is not present, a comparable volume of body hair can be used. References to head hair mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair includes all other varieties (facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The procedure of laboratory analysis for drug testing incorporates four key phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the primary stage where the sample enters the lab’s system. It involves confirming the sample’s proper sealing and shipping, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing necessary data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers an initial, swift evaluation for substance abuse. Although Screening efficiently excludes drug consumption in the majority of cases, a positive outcome requires confirmation to be court-acceptable. Samples that are potentially positive in Screening require additional confirmation.

If a sample indicates positive during Screening, additional hair is drawn from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. Here, substances are retrieved from hair at much lower levels than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug analysis the most challenging methodology to execute.

Final confirmation of any positive results from screening is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All suspected positive specimens undergo washing before confirmation if needed. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the entire laboratory process is reviewed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and is accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug analysis:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to manipulate: It is notably challenging to alter a hair drug test, ensuring greater accuracy in results.
  • Reveals historical patterns: It can demonstrate a history of substance use over time, not only recent usage.

Drawbacks:

  • Not suitable for recent use detection: It takes approximately 5-7 days before drugs become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth may affect the levels of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: While often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand and not on the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
