Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Timber Hills, Pennsylvania. If you're in need of a hair or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched, with facilities available across the nation to conduct hair tests. Usually, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is necessary for testing. Hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored testing options.

Lately, drug testing methods have increasingly adopted hair follicle tests. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts often prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. Employers enforcing zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and individuals on probation frequently opt for this method. The main advantage of hair follicle tests is their extended detection window, typically up to 90 days, under an observed collection protocol, making them hard to tamper with. However, urine tests remain the most precise for detecting drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair holds a detailed history of substances by encapsulating biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When obtained near the scalp, hair can offer a detection span of up to three months for substances. It is straightforward to collect, less prone to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches comprising roughly 200 hair strands (equivalent to a #2 pencil's size) nearest the scalp will yield about 100mg, which is the optimal quantity for both testing and confirmation. For EtG enhancements and/or examinations beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale is recommended for weighing the sample. In the absence of scalp hair, a comparable quantity of body hair can be obtained. By head hair, we imply scalp hair only, while body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug testing laboratory process includes four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the preliminary incorporation of a sample into a lab’s system. This step ensures that the sample was correctly sealed and delivered, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and concludes any further data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody.

Screening consists of a preliminary rapid assessment for substances. Despite being cost-efficient to eliminate drug presence in the majority of samples, a positive screening must be substantiated for legal acceptance. Samples indicating a presumptive positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If a presumptive positive is found during Screening, additional hair from the original sample is prepared for Extraction. Here, drugs are derived from hair at significantly lower levels than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing is among the most challenging procedures.

Confirmation of a positive screening outcome occurs using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methodologies. All samples suggesting a presumptive positive are cleaned before confirmation as required. The comprehensive lab workflow from Accessioning through Confirmation is inspected under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair specification and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests identify drug usage for up to 90 days, which is longer compared to urine tests.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is quite challenging, thus enhancing result precision.
  • Shows usage history: It offers a record of drug consumption over a timeframe, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be costlier than alternative testing strategies.
  • Result variations: Elements, including hair color and growth variations, can influence the drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis itself focuses on the hair strand and not the follicle below the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing the benefits of hair follicle testing to traditional urine tests in Timber Hills, PA, the former emerges superior. Hair tests offer enhanced accuracy, uncovering drug use with greater precision and reliability.

Hair follicle tests, unlike urine tests, provide a broader detection window. Employers favor hair testing for its reliability, as it effectively uncovers a prolonged history of substance use as opposed to the limited scope of urine tests.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle tests in Timber Hills, PA, offer an extended detection period, capturing drug use up to 90 days in the past. This comprehensive assessment is invaluable for employers evaluating an employee or applicant's prior substance usage.

With a longer detection window, hair testing provides a deeper insight into an individual's substance history. The extended period of assessment enables a thorough review of past drug use, supporting more informed decisions by employers.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
