Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Tower City, Pennsylvania. If a hair drug or alcohol test is needed, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in hair testing, with facilities in cities nationwide ready to conduct a hair test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair are required from the head's crown or elsewhere on the body. Hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or provide other tailored hair testing solutions.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly incorporated hair follicle drug tests. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals are often choosing hair tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle drug screens are favored by employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probationary individuals. Their major advantage lies in a prolonged drug detection window of up to 90 days, collected via an observed method, making them nearly cheat-proof. For usage detected within 5 days, urine tests remain the best indicator.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now viewed as a robust means for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair captures a chronological archive of alcohol and drug exposure by embedding biomarkers within the hair strand's fibers as it grows. A sample taken near the scalp can offer up to an approximately 3-month window for detecting alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to gather, relatively tough to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (about the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, an optimal sample for evaluation and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels beyond 10, 150mg of the specimen is preferred. It's advised to measure the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn’t an option, an equivalent volume of body hair is acceptable. When we mention head hair, we exclusively mean scalp hair. Body hair pertains to all other types (facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary phases of processing a drug test result in a lab are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary handling of a sample in a lab's system. This incorporates ensuring the sample's seal and proper shipment, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing additional data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening conducts an initial swift assessment for drug abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive screen calls for verification to be valid in court. Samples showing potential positives in Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

If Screening suggests a sample is positive, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are retrieved from hair at a notably lower concentration than other techniques (like urine or oral fluid), which renders hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Positive screening results undergo Confirmation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples suspected to be positive are washed preceding confirmation as required. The laboratory workflow, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and the certification to ISO / IEC 17025 guidelines.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for a span of up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which are constrained to a shorter timeframe.
  • Hard to falsify: A hair drug test is considerably challenging to tamper with, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Shows usage history: It can outline drug consumption trends over time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Detectability of drugs in hair takes around 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Often called "hair follicle tests", this test actually examines the hair strand rather than the follicle underneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why do Tower City, PA residents choose hair follicle testing over urine tests? The superior detection rate and accuracy of hair tests reveal drug use over longer periods, unlike the narrow scope of urine screens. Hair tests provide robust evidence that withstands scrutiny, offering users confidence in results. Their capability to trace compounds far outweighs the limitations faced by standard tests. Employers and legal bodies strive for such precision.

Extended Detection Window

In Tower City, PA, hair follicle testing uniquely captures drug use over an extended window of up to 90 days. This long-term detection allows employers a detailed insight into an individual’s substance history. Unlike short-term urine tests, hair testing uncovers hidden patterns that are otherwise missed. This extended window ensures a thorough assessment of anyone’s compliance and lifestyle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
