Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug analysis in Trevorton, Pennsylvania. Whether you're in need of hair drug or alcohol testing, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair examinations, conveniently offering centers in every city across the nation to conduct a hair test. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown of the head – or body if necessary – can be used. Hair assessments can be analyzed for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored to other specific needs.

Over recent years, the approach to drug testing increasingly involves the use of a hair follicle drug check. A growing number of employers, judicial systems, and substance counseling specialists now favor hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Those advocating zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and probationers utilize hair follicle assessments. The integral advantage is its elongated detection window of drug use, reaching up to 90 days, gathered in monitored scenarios, rendering it nearly immune to tampering. Still, for detection within the past five days, urine testing retains the highest accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a chronic timeline of alcohol and drug intake by embedding biomarkers within the growing hair fibers. When gathered near the scalp, hair can reveal up to an approximately three-month detection timeframe for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample, approximately 200 strands (resembling a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, yields about 100mg of hair, optimal for testing and confirmation. For EtG, additional, and/or panels exceeding 10 tests, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. If scalp hair isn't accessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be used. By head hair, we mean scalp hair alone. Body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The procedure for processing a drug test result in a lab involves four major steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial integration of a sample into a lab’s system. This ensures the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening acts as an initial swift check for substance misuse. Though Screening is an economical way to dismiss drug usage for most samples, a positive result must be confirmed for legal admissibility. Any samples suspected of being positive during Screening need further confirmation.

If a sample is suspected of positivity during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are separated from hair at a far lower concentration than other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive result from Screening is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All suspected positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if needed. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review according to the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditations.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, compared to urine tests that have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is quite difficult, making the outcomes more reliable.
  • Offers historic insight: It can display a drug use pattern over time, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Fails at detecting recent use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually cost more than other drug test approaches.
  • Results variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth variations may influence drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: The term "hair follicle tests" is a misnomer; the test examines the hair strand, not the follicle below the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Trevorton, PA
In contrast to urine tests, hair follicle assessments offer superior detection accuracy, proving more reliable over longer timelines. By encompassing up to a 90 days window, they track substance use over an extended period, unlike urine tests, which detect recent use. This advantage makes hair tests a prominent choice for those requiring comprehensive substance history.

The ability to avoid sample contamination or alterations further stands out as a testament to hair testing's reliability. While urine tests have the potential for manipulation, hair tests provide near-impervious integrity, ensuring results truly reflect an individual's past substance use patterns.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection Window in Trevorton, PA
Hair follicle testing offers a considerably longer discovery period for substances, monitoring drug use for up to 90 days. This comprehensive insight allows employers to have a substantial look over the applicant or employee's history with drugs, offering an extended window for evaluation compared to shorter-scope testing types.

The benefit of such a prolonged detection timeframe is vital for employers seeking detailed background checks. By encapsulating this lengthened period, organizations are better equipped to make educated decisions regarding hiring and employment maintenance, adding a significant layer of reliability to their operations.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
